Last year Leicestershire County Council received a request to convert the existing Zebra Crossing on High Street, Barrow upon Soar to a signal-controlled Puffin. It has long been accepted national practice to assess the justification for a pedestrian crossing using a calculation involving both pedestrian and vehicle flows. This is known as ‘PV2’ and effectively evaluates the potential for conflict between vehicles and pedestrians. Having carried out the assessment (which includes the additional enhanced criteria) the PV2 score was 2.3 and therefore meets with our criteria for puffin controlled pedestrian facilities. Works will involve removing all lining / signing associated with the zebra crossing and replacing them with new tactile paving, lining and traffic signal equipment for the puffin crossing. The crossing location and controlled zig zag area will remain in the same place as well as the kerbline and existing speed table. Works are anticipated to last 2-3 weeks and will be mostly carried out during weekdays during the off-peak period. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the duration of the works. The start date has not yet been confirmed..
