BLUEMOUND RD. P.O.BOX 13819 MIL.WAUKEE, Wl53213 PROGRAM NOTES 'When the hounds of spring are on winter's traces, "a magical picture of young Iove in springtime, forms the basis for the present purely musical setting, in traditional three-part form, of this lovely paean ... an attempt to capture the twin elements of the poem, exuberant youthful gaiety and the sweetness of tender Iove, in an appropriate musical texture. The poem, a recreation in modern English of an ancient Greek tragedy, appeared in print in 1865, when the poet was 28 years old. lt made Algemon Swinburne literally an overnight success. The Hounds of Spring was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the John L. Forster Secondary School Symphonie Band of Windsor, Ontario, and its director, Gerald A. N. Brown. The first performance took place in Windsor on May 8th, 1980, by the aforementioned group, under the direction of the composer. PERFORMANCE NOTES Lightness and brilliance combine with a driving tempo in the first and third sections of this music. Make the textures sound clearly and cleanly at all times. Separated eighth-notes in tongued passages, and clear articulations in the attack of all such notes, will be found to yield the clarity and lightness that the music demands for its proper effect. The middle section, while fairly slow and restrained, must not be permitted to drag at any time. ·Inner contrapuntal lines must have sufficient time to be heard clearly as against the main melodic lines, and occasional rubato may therefore be judiciously employed. There should be a distinctly different feeling as between the 6/8 and 3/4 measures in these sections, the 6/8 producing a definite two-pulse effect, and the 3/4 a three-pulse effect, with, of course, the eighth-notes remaining absolutely constant in either case. Altred Reed This new edition of Altred Reed's The Hounds of Spring is edited, abridged and somewhat simplified as to range, technical difficulty, and instrumentation to make this masterpiece for winds accessible to more bands and younger players.
