George Santayana Ladies and Gentlemen, We are looking forward to an exceptional 2018/2019 season at the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin. It is a time of great celebration and joy of music. Additionally, it is a time of remembrance of the extraordinary history of the place, and above all of the artists, their sensitivity and emotions, which they have been sharing with us for the last 70 years. Likely few of the inhabitants of Szczecin remember the first concert of the the Workers’ Music Association Symphony Orchestra, direct predecessor of the Philharmonic ensemble, which took place on October 25, 1948. That was when our story began, full of colorful interpretations of great works, discovering forgotten sounds and, finally, unique meetings of artists and great musical personalities. It is thanks to their passion and determination that today we experience somewhat of a ‘continuum of sound’, a story that develops in different directions and has many threads. The history and memory of this invariably give us motivation and energy for further more more daring actions and bold visions of the future, for which the beauty of music and the uniqueness of every encounter with music lovers remain the common denominator. We invite you to participate in our musical discoveries and stories, and believe as John Dewey noted: ‘Time and memory are true artists; they remould reality nearer to the heart’s desire.’ Dorota Serwa Managing Director of the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin 8 RUNE BERGMANN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE MIECZYSŁAW KARŁOWICZ PHILHARMONIC IN SZCZECIN Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to wish our Orchestra all the best as we are entering a jubilee season, during which we will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Orchestra’s artistic activity. I personally feel obliged by this celebration to make sure that the forthcoming season features exceptional artists both from Poland and abroad, so that the event feels like it cannot be missed. I have already entered my third season with the orchestra. Our cooperation has resulted in development and also a lot of fun. I travel around the world, see and experience many new places, yet coming back to Szczecin, to the Philharmonic, feels like coming back home. On those journeys to various cities I keep hearing that the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra is becoming more and more recognized around the world, and that is a good reason to be proud. Szczecin has so much to offer as a beautiful city with its intriguing history, and also as a place with a concert hall with great sound quality hosting the Symphony Orchestra, with which I like working so much. Let us celebrate this anniversary season together. Welcome, I look forward to seeing you at the concerts.
