It also set in motion our next quest to provide the highest quality and best possible assistance to Australian athletes as they prepare for the challenges of the Winter Games in Vancouver and the XXX Olympic Summer Games in London. It is now just under one year to go until our winter athletes take centre stage in Vancouver, Canada. Australia hopes to qualify 35 athletes for the Vancouver 2010 Games. Australian Winter Olympians have medaled at every Games since Lillehammer 1994 and there are several medal chances for 2010 with the greatest hopes in aerial skiing, moguls skiing, skicross and snowboarding. Queensland has produced some remarkable Winter Olympic results and we hope to see Queenslanders yet again achieving outstanding results in Vancouver. The past year has been a busy one for the QOC with our fundraising efforts intensifying as the Games approached. I alluded to the tightening of fundraising environment in my last report and this competitive environment contracted further during 2008 as deteriorating economic conditions put extreme pressure on our fundraising efforts. The forward view of the Board is that these conditions will continue as competition for limited discretionary donations and sponsorships across the not-for-profit sector intensifies. The enormous community support that has gone out to those affected by recent natural disasters will (quite rightly) divert funds from Olympic and other not-for-profit causes. The Queensland Olympic Movement stands ready and willing to assist those in need in whatever capacity we can to help those individuals and communities through their hardships and back onto the road to recovery. Olympic ideals of fraternity, friendship, peace and understanding come very much to the fore in this regard. Over the past four years our fundraising committee has worked tirelessly raising funds to ensure our athletes had necessary resources to achieve their best in Beijing. Their efforts and the many thousands of Queenslanders who contributed to the Team Fund over the past four years were rewarded by the results achieved by the Australian Team and in particular Queensland athletes in Beijing. In all 114 Queensland athletes were part of the Australian Team (25%) and their efforts returned 66 medals, 18 of them gold. On behalf of the QOC I would like to congratulate every team member on their achievements. Across Queensland we celebrated with the Team as they strove to do their best, regardless of the outcome. They are an inspiration for many Queenslanders to achieve personal dreams through their lessons of strength, sacrifice and determination. Whilst fundraising struggled, our ongoing community engagement and education programs went from strength to strength. In June we celebrated with 141 recipients of the Pierre de Coubertin Award at the Queensland Conservatorium and witnessed the remarkable achievements of these outstanding Queensland students. In all 210 schools participated in the 2008 Awards. I would like to recognise the contribution of the QOC Education Commission, Education Queensland and Monica Klysz in the successful delivery of this program. The Queensland Government’s support of the Olympic Movement and in particular through the Minister Judy Spence and the Department of Sport and Recreation ensures the QOC can reach a broad cross section of the community throughout the state. The QOC continued to support “Get Active” and “Find your Thirty” campaigns and promoted the Olympic ethos and values through school and community visitations throughout the state. Our key messages include participation and fair play. Health and wellness and in particular the growing rise in cases of chronic disease such as diabetes and heart disease as a result of obesity and inactivity in the Queensland population was brought into sharp focus with the release of the Chief Medical Officer’s report on The Health of Queenslanders; Prevention of Chronic Disease during the year. As a policy response, the Government has put forward a plan for Tomorrow’s Queensland - Q2 , Queensland’s 2020 vision. 7 Promoting physical activity and sport using Olympism, closely align with objectives of the Queensland Government which is why we believe our partnership with the Government is so valuable. Nowhere is this more evident in the role the QOC and the broader Olympic movement can play in supporting the Government’s 2020 target to reduce obesity by 30% and help to make Queenslanders Australia’s healthiest population. Increasing participation in physical exercise and promoting participation in sport using Olympians as role models is a tangible way the QOC is contributing to the Government’s Q2 targets. The Queensland Government through the Premiers Department, Department of Sport and Recreation and the Education Department continue to be strong supporters of both Queenslanders on the Australian Olympic Team and the Queensland Olympic Council. We thank them sincerely on behalf of all Queensland Olympians and aspiring Queensland Olympic hopefuls. This year’s report brings to a close another Olympiad. I would like to acknowledge and thank my fellow Board members, Executive staff, our volunteers, sponsors and supporters for their support of the QOC and the Olympic movement over the past four years. I would like to also make special mention of retiring Board members Garry West-Bail, Nicole Pensko and Jeff Cheales for their contributions over the past Olympiad. 2009 will herald a new set of challenges as we strive towards Vancouver next year and London in 2012. Working together we can make the contribution required to ensure our athletes in Vancouver and London have every opportunity to perform at their best and young Queenslanders can be inspired to participate in sport and physical activity that may see them emulate what our current Olympians have achieved. Richard Powell President 8 Executive Director’s Report It is a pleasure to present my Executive Director’s report for 2008. What a wonderful experience it has been to have played a small part in assisting our athletes through their Olympic Games journey and to have shared in their success. 2008 was a wonderful year to be at the helm of the QOC and full of memories that will last a lifetime. Firstly let me share how proud all of us are of our Queensland Olympians who went to Beijing.
