Leverkusen, in contrast, came from behind at home to Ferencváros to win 2-1 thanks to an equaliser from Exequiel Palacios and a 69th-minute winner from 18-year-old Florian Wirtz. Previous meetings • This is the clubs' first encounter in UEFA club competition. • Celtic are familiar with German opposition, though they have won just four of the 24 matches, losing 15. The victories have all come on home soil, including a 2-1 success against RB Leipzig in the most recent, on Matchday 4 of the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League, which ended a run of three successive home defeats by Bundesliga sides. • Leverkusen's only four previous encounters with Scottish opposition have all been against Rangers, with a 3-1 win at Ibrox setting up a 4-1 aggregate triumph in the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League round of 16. Charles Aránguiz scored the German side's second in Glasgow, Moussa Diaby getting the only goal of the second leg at the BayArena. Form guide Celtic • Celtic missed out on an unprecedented tenth successive Scottish league title last season, finishing 25 points adrift of arch-rivals Rangers as Premiership runners-up. Their European campaign ended in the UEFA Europa League group stage, where they came bottom of a section including AC Milan, LOSC Lille and Sparta Praha. • This term, under new manager Ange Postecoglou, Celtic were unable to negotiate the UEFA Champions League qualifying phase for the fourth successive summer, losing after extra time to Midtjylland in the second qualifying round (1-1 h, 1-2 a), but subsequent UEFA Europa League qualifying victories over Jablonec (4-2 a, 3-0 h) and AZ Alkmaar (2-0 h, 1-2 a) put them into the competition's group stage for the eighth time. The Glasgow giants have made further progress in just three of the previous seven participations, once as group winners (2019/20). • Celtic lost two of their three UEFA Europa League group stage matches at Celtic Park last season, winning the other, to make their all-time home record in the competition proper W11 D4 L10. Leverkusen • Sixth place in the 2020/21 Bundesliga earned Leverkusen a fourth successive participation in the UEFA Europa League. They were quarter-finalists in 2019/20 – after finishing third in their UEFA Champions League group – and round of 32 fallers last season, succumbing to Swiss champions Young Boys (3-4 a, 0-2 h), whose coach Gerardo Seoane is now in charge at the BayArena. • This is the 1987/88 UEFA Cup winners' seventh appearance in the UEFA Europa League proper and fifth in the group stage – both German records. They have never failed to progress to the knockout phase, finishing top of the group in their two most recent participations, including last season when, under former coach Peter Bosz, they amassed 15 points and scored 21 goals – one shy of Napoli's competition record – in dominating a section that also featured Slavia Praha, Nice and Hapoel Beer-Sheva. • Leverkusen have won eight of their last 17 European away fixtures (D4 L5) and have an all-time away record in the UEFA Europa League group stage of W7 D2 L3, although they have lost once on the road in each of their last three group campaigns, most recently to Slavia Praha (0-1) in 2020/21. Links and trivia • Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong joined Leverkusen from Celtic in January. He made 51 appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys, scoring three goals, and was a domestic treble winner in 2019/20. • Swiss international Aleti and his Celtic team-mate Christopher Jullien have both played briefly in Germany, for Augsburg and Freiburg respectively. • Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick scored both goals, one of them spectacularly from the halfway line, as the Czech Republic defeated Scotland 2-0 in their UEFA EURO 2020 opener at Hampden Park on 14 June this year. Celtic duo Callum McGregor and James Forrest were second-half substitutes for Scotland. • Vassilis Barkas and Georgios Giakoumakis of Celtic are Greek national team-mates of Leverkusen defender Panagiotis Retsos. • Celtic are one of four former European Cup/UEFA Champions League winners competing in this season's UEFA 5 Celtic FC - Bayer 04 Leverkusen Thursday 30 September 2021 - 21.00CET (20.00 local time) Match press kit Celtic Park, Glasgow Europa League group stage – together with PSV Eindhoven (Group B), Marseille (E) and Crvena zvezda (F).
