C. 1\:arumbayya N ominees of the Sahitya Akadem.i: _Vominees of the Sangeet IVatah Akademi: Dr. Suniti Kumar C hatterjee Shrimati Devika Rani Roerich Shri Umashankar Joshi Sardar Surjit Singh I LA LIT KALA AKADAMI Report of the Selection and Judging Committee of the (National Academy of Art) National Exhibition of Art, 1956 We received altogether 650 entries (by 217 artists) out of which 171 exhibits were selected after very careful scrutiny. It was the intention of the Executive Board Committee to encourage the best works of every school and in the final selection all trends of contemporary art in India were represented. Shri D .P. Roy Chowdhury Dr. J.H. Cousins The standard of works submitted for selection was good and varied in Shri Karl J. Khandalavala Shri B.C. Gue quality. The unquestionable merit of the selected works for awards enabled the Committee to arrive at the decisions unanimously. Prof. Humayun Kabir Shri K .K. Hebbar Names of artists were not taken into consideration at all while selecting and Shri C.S. Menon Shri B.C. Sanyal judging exhibits. Indeed, on finalising the work it was found that half the number of the awards had been given to young, promising and lesser known artists. Shri l\I.S. Randbawa, I.C.S. P rof. N.S. Bendre The Committeee is of the opi nion that the Natio{ral Exhibition has a S hri RaYishankar M. Ra,·al Shri K.C.S. Paniker special significance and as such it is expected of all artists to • put in their very best efforts and thereby enhance the cause for which the National Academy stands. Shri Ba rada Ukil (Ex-officio) The Committee recommends to the Council of the Akadami to adopt some convenient ways of recruiting pictures from various regions to facil itate and ensure larger participation. Schlesinger , Pradosh Das Gupta ,, Shiavax Chavda , Sailoz Mookherj ee IMPORTANT Jyoti Manshanker Bhatt (Prize) Exhibit No. 48 Rules governing sale of exhibits 1. All transactions regarding the sale of any exhibit displayed in the Exhibition must be done through the SECRETARY, Lalit Kala Akadami or his appointed representative at the Exhibition premises. No sale agreed upon otherwise by any of the parties is valid ; and for the consequences r esulting from such tra nsa ctions the Lalit Kala Akada mi will not b e responsible. 2. Buyers must deposit at least 10% of the price of the exhibit at the t ime of reserving the exhibit as sold. The balance of the price amount is to be paid at the time of t he delivery of the exhibit after the close of the Exhibition. T he deposit of 1 0 °~ shaU be forfeited by the prospective buyer in case the buyer deter­ mines not to buy the painting after having reserved it. 3. Sale of any exhibit shall be deemed unconfirmed till the full amount of the price of the exhibit is paid by the buyer and the exhibit is taken delivery of. 4. The Lalit Kala Akadami wi ll not be responsible for any cancellation of sale by the buyer after the buyer had reserved the same. In such an event, however, the exhibitor or the artist shall be compensated with the 10% deposit received from the buyer at the time of booking the exhibit.
