Each practice session must present student athletes with an environment that promotes learning, physical development, and social development. 1. Athletes are to learn and improve throughout the season. Practice must emphasize sport- specific skills and strategies. All athletes must have the opportunity to strive for success and achieve to the highest level that they are willing to work toward. 2. Athletic programs must teach, model, and emphasize lifelong lessons and qualities. These goals must include the ability to work with others toward a common goal, sacrificing individual goals for the welfare and betterment of the team, and the ability to persevere. 3. Coaches, athletes and teams must represent the school in a positive manner. The emphasis of all programs will be sportsmanship, integrity, and Pursuing Victory with Honor. Athletes, coaches, and fans must exhibit respect for everyone involved in athletic contests: opponents, officials, coaches, and fans. Athletes are to be good citizens and serve as positive role models and ambassadors for the school. 4. Athletes are expected to have a good, memorable, and enjoyable experience. This means that athletes should enjoy the challenges of competition, camaraderie of fellow athletes, share in team activities, and develop lifelong positive memories. 5. Teams and coaches must prepare, work hard, & strive to succeed. Success must be achieved through daily effort, discipline and working together toward a common goal. Programs are expected to present a quality and enjoyable experience for the student body, fans, parents, and the community, and will represent educational goals and objectives for their teams and daily practice plans must reflect those objectives. LA CUEVA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES CODE A Code of Conduct Contract for Student Participants, Parents, Spectators, and Fans I am Respectful of my teammates, coaches, officials, and opponents. I work at maintaining my positive attitude even in the face of the tremendous pressures of the game. I will not use profanity or make inappropriate comments toward my teammates or opponents. I respect my body by avoiding the use of dangerous and illegal substances. I am Loyal to my teammates. I do not criticize my teammates or coaches publicly. Any comments I make to or about them I will make directly to them. My only reason to comment on play or performance is to assist them in becoming a better athlete. I realize my obligation to the team. I will be on time and be prepared to perform. I will arrive with an open mind and a willingness to learn. I will maintain a positive attitude. I will practice and play to the utmost of my abilities. I am Trustworthy. I do not spread rumors and I keep confidential those things entrusted to me. I will keep my commitments to my family, my coaches, my school, my team, and the community I live in. I am Honest. I do not lie, cheat, or break the rules. When I am unable to keep commitments, I will apologize to those who are depending on me. I will not be deceptive in my speech, actions, or behaviors. I accept full Responsibility for my actions. I am committed to doing my personal best on and off the field. When things get tough, I continue to focus on my goals. I am accountable for my behavior. I will demonstrate self-control and sportsmanship at practice, during contests, and throughout my life. I practice Fairness in all I do. I will refrain from judgment, giving my teammates my support and encouragement and always strive to understand the situation in which I find myself. I will teach and model fair play. I will play by the rules and lead my teammates to do likewise. Fairness includes not using Performance Enhancing Drugs/Stimulants/Illegal substances. I am a Caring individual who shows compassion, kindness and unselfishly attempts to treat others the way I would like to be treated. I will think of my team before I think of self or seek to use Performance Enhancing Drugs or other illegal methods to attempt to obtain an advantage I practice good Citizenship by playing by the rules governing my sport, respecting the authority of the officials and coaches. I play with emotion and I direct that emotion towards my performance and the game not other players or officials. I am aware that circumstances may arise that will not go in my favor and I will work hard at taking the emotional stress generated by such events and directing that energy at doing my job better. • I realize that as a La Cueva Student-Athlete, I am expected to model appropriate behaviors on the athletic field, in the classroom, on campus, at athletic events, and in the community. My responsibility is to represent La Cueva in a positive manner as a citizen of this community. • I will model these behaviors whether I am performing as an athlete or acting as a spectator or fan. • As a parent of a student-athlete, I realize that it is my responsibility to model appropriate behaviors and thecharacter qualities listed above. I am also responsible to instruct about appropriate behaviors and monitor my student-athlete’s behavior when he/she is not in the presence of school coaches, officials, or administrators. I am to model the attributes of Respect, Trustworthiness, Honesty, Responsibility, Caring, and Citizenship when attending events, meetings, or any function when representing La Cueva High School. • Hopefully, these modeled behaviors will become part of the lifestyle of the students and the parents. • I understand the concept of “Pursuing Victory with Honor” and purpose to display sportsmanship and fair play in each contest, practice and in my interactions with other students, coaches, fans, and officials. ALBUQUERQUE PUBLIC SCHOOLS SPECTATOR CODE OF EXPECTATIONS FOR ATHLETICS The essential elements of character-building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship as referenced in “Pursuing Victory With Honor” and in the six core principles of character education: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these principles. Please be advised the Albuquerque Public Schools has a code of expectations for all spectators participating in the athletic experience. Your cooperation in adhering to the following obligations as a spectator at athletic events is appreciated and necessary to provide the most quality experience for every person participating and to ensure the best possible environment for all student-athletes, coaches, officials and other spectators. Ɣ I will do my part to make athletics and activities a positive experience for everyone involved (i.e. participants, coaches, officials and spectators) Ɣ I will learn the policies of school district, school and program and do my best to understand and appreciate the rules of the contest Ɣ I will encourage good sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy and by being a positive role model at every event and practice Ɣ I will not engage in any unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, parent or staff member, such as taunting or using profane language or gestures Ɣ I will demand a safe and healthy environment that is free from drugs, tobacco and alcohol and will refrain from any use at all athletic events Ɣ I will not engage in disparaging dialogue or taunting behavior with officials, players, coaches, parents and other spectators before, during and after all events Ɣ I will refrain from coaching any player during games/ practices unless I am a staff coach Ɣ I will never ridicule or yell at any participant for making a mistake or blame any player or coach for success or failure in the athletic setting Ɣ I will respect the decisions and authority of officials during competitions Ɣ I will respect the property and equipment used at any sports or school facility Ɣ I will show appreciation for an outstanding play by either team Ɣ I will applaud a good effort in both victory and defeat emphasizing the positive accomplishments and learning from the mistakes In the event any spectator fails to adhere to and uphold these obligations, the school administration and the school district reserves the right to impose sanctions including disciplinary action that may include, but is not limited to, temporary and/or permanent removal from the activity and expulsion from all future events. PARENT INFORMATION - EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS Parental Obligations for the Student-Athletes Privilege to Participate. A. Adhere to and promote “Pursuing Victory with Honor” character education program B. Understand how the athletic program is an integral part of the overall school educational program and philosophy C. Understand and support the philosophy and objectives of the school, team, and coach. D. Understand and support the expectations the coach has for the athletes and support the coaching staff in achieving these expectations. Attend mandatory parent meetings. Understand the role of the parent. E. Understand the role of the booster club F. Become part of the volunteer program to help and support Booster Clubs, fund raising, team spirit, player support, and program enhancement. G. Be a positive role model as a parent and a fan in supporting the program and the athletes.
