Birth name and who was he named after? Edson Arantes do Nascimento. He was named after Thomas Edison as his village had gotten electricity shortly before his birth. Nickname: Pelé Known For: He was a great soccer player who helped his native country, Brazil, win its first World Cup championship when he was only 17. Family: Father: João Ramos, nickname: Dondinho. He was a soccer player, too. Mother: Celeste. Younger brother, Jair, and younger sister, Maria Lúcia. The family did not have much money as soccer players were not paid very well. Jobs he had as a child: 1. A shoeshine boy at the railroad station. 2. Worked at the soccer stadium. 3. Helped his dad clean at the health clinic. What did he do for fun as a child? Played soccer with other boys with a sock ball. Most of them did not have shoes. Pelé’s first soccer team: Started when he was 10. The first name was the September 7. They saved stickers to get a soccer ball, but they had no shoes. They changed their names to the Shoeless Ones. Some of the dads bought the team shoes so they could enter a tournament so then they were called Amériquinha. Pelé’s first professional soccer team: Pele was invited to play on the Bauru junior team for a little bit of pay. The team had a great coach, Waldemar de Brito. School: He started school late since his parents did not have much money. He had trouble focusing and had to repeat a grade, but finally finished elementary school as a teenager. Playing on the Santos FC team: Pele and his coach moved to the Santos FC team when Pele was about 14. He had to live in a dormitory with other players and the other players were older and bigger than him. It took a year of hard work before he was able to play in an official league game. By age 17, he had become a key player of the team. Pelé’s first time on the Brazil national team: In 1958, Pele made the Brazilian national team when he was 17 and traveled to Sweden to play in the World Cup.
