The aim of the conference is to pass a resolution that will be a comprehensive solution to the problem that serves as the agenda item. This draft resolution is put through a voting process in which each country casts one vote. • For a number of years, UN University and the Japan Model United Nations have been working together to strengthen and encourage the participation of Japanese university students in Model United Nations activities. UN University fully supports Model United Nations activities as a means to encourage global thinking, interest in the UN, and interaction with Japanese institutions of higher education. • In the spring, about ten university students from Japan will participate in the international Model United Nations Conference that is held in New York. • In their Research Presentation to be held at the UN University on 26 February, the Japanese student delegates to the Model United Nations Conference will practice by presenting the position and policy of their assigned countries, the Republic of Djibouti and the Republic of Panama, in each attending committee. • The presentations will be divided into three sessions: General Assembly and Security Council, Economic and Social Council, and Intergovernmental Organizations. • The Model United Nations works to further understanding of the United Nations and contemporary international problems, and prepares participants to be better global citizens. • For over 50 years, teachers and students have benefited from and enjoyed this interactive learning experience. The Model United Nations not only involves young people in the study and discussion of global issues, but also encourages them to develop skills that will be useful throughout their lives, such as research, writing, public speaking, problem solving, consensus building, conflict resolution, and compromise and cooperation. Media representatives are cordially invited to attend the 2008 Japan Model United Nations Research Presentation. Please contact Naoko Yano, UNU Office of Communications (TEL: 03-5467-1311; e- mail: [email protected]) to confirm your attendance. The United Nations University (UNU) is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly dedicated to generating and transferring knowledge and strengthening capacities relevant to global issues of human security, development, and welfare. The University operates through a worldwide network of research and training centres and programmes, coordinated by UNU Centre, based in Tokyo. .
