On behalf of the local organizing committee of the 8th World Congress of the International Health Economics Association, I welcome you to Toronto, a city that derived its name from a word in the local Huron dialect meaning “place of meetings.” So, it is appropriate that we are meeting together in an emerging world-class city. In thinking about the conference theme – Transforming Health and Economics – I can’t help but be struck the year in the West that the post World-War II “baby boom” begins to turn age 65. The issues surrounding this trend have been a major part of the literature for the last two decades. It is now time to begin to turn our attention 30 years into the future when the number of “boomers” begins to decrease, and issues regarding excess capacity and the need for retraining labor, among others, will predominate. the tremendous growth of our discipline has shown that we can collectively develop the tools and expertise necessary to investigate the potential implications of different strategies and insightfully inform policy. The iHEA meeting plays an important role in this regard since it provides a forum for debating ideas, building the attractions. Whether your interests lie in the arts, sports or nature, there are innumerable choices available. Toronto has experienced a cultural renaissance with recent expansions and renovations of the Royal Ontario Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
