The programme targets able young people with non-traditional backgrounds which make a third-level education more difficult. It offers them the guidance and support needed to encourage their success. Queen's helps tackle colorectal cancer A prestigious transatlantic partnership at Queen's has been awarded £4.6m to develop new diagnostic approaches and treatments for colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer in the world. The award brings together leading researchers from Queen's, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and GE Healthcare in the US in an interdisciplinary research programme. Monster planet discovery A giant gassy planet has been discovered by an international collaboration of astronomers, including researchers at Queen's. The size of Jupiter, it is the largest planet - compared to the size of its companion star - ever found in the universe and challenges the theory that a huge planet could not be formed by such a small star. Boost for local artisan food sector Queen's Unversity has been awarded £88,000 from Invest NI to launch a major new research project in support of Northern Ireland's growing artisan food sector. High-quality local delicacies include single breed beef, traditionally made yoghurts and speciality bakery products such as soda and potato bread. Supporting cancer research - for the love of Amy Cancer research at Queen's has benefitted to the tune of £3,000, thanks to the successful musical fundraising efforts of the Reid family from County Down. To date, over £6,000 has been donated by the family to the CCRCB for cancer research in memory of their daughter Amy, who died in February 2013 aged 20 years old, from metastic melanoma. Ruth Dudley Edwards to address Convocation Queen's 2011 Honorary Graduate, Ruth Dudley Edwards, is the keynote speaker at the Annual Meeting of Convocation which starts at 5.30pm on Thursday 16 November. The meeting is open to all Queen's graduates. The distinguished historian, journalist, biographer and crime novelist will address members after the formal business has been conducted in the University's Council Chamber/Canada Room.
