SAVE A Friend to Homeless Animals 2014-2015 Annual Report Message from the Executive Director Dear SAVE Friends: Thank you for another great year! The success of SAVE would not be possible without your loyalty and involvement. Your ongoing support makes a significant difference in every area of the shelter’s programming. Several highlights from 2014-2015 include: • The establishment of a formal foster program for SAVE’s more needy animals. • Another terrific Gala and Holiday Boutique raising nearly $164,000 for SAVE. • Greater visibility throughout Mercer and Somerset Counties due to events, school visits, adoption days, and more. As many of you already know, SAVE’s remarkable staff and volunteers work hard to ensure that SAVE’s animals are well cared for and are quickly placed. The shelter’s reputation has grown and families know what a great job we do matching needy animals to caring people. Of course, we are more dependent now than ever on individual contributions. While we have seen an increase in donations in the last year, shelter expenses remain high. Providing quality care to the animals in residence is SAVE’s top priority. Again, thank you for your leadership and commitment to SAVE. Building a bright future for many dogs and cats is what makes the SAVE family so special. With deep gratitude, Piper H. Burrows Executive Director Our Mission SAVE, A Friend to Homeless Animals, is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit shelter and animal welfare organization dedicated to protecting the health and well-being of companion animals in the Princeton region. Through six core programs of Rescue, Shelter, Health and Welfare, Spay/Neuter, Adoption and Humane Education, SAVE strives to substantially reduce animal overpopulation and the corresponding euthanasia of adoptable dogs and cats. SAVE endeavors to build, foster, and strengthen the human-animal bond. 2014-2015 Highlights ADOPTION PROGRAM At SAVE, our primary mission is to find every animal in our care a good home. Because we strongly believe that every animal deserves a second chance, we have a comprehensive adoption program that includes community outreach, adopter screening, animal behavior counseling, and follow up services. Through our efforts last year, 449 animals were adopted from SAVE. SPAY & NEUTER PROCEDURES SAVE strives to reduce the overwhelming number of unwanted animals that often become homeless or abused. During the 2014-2015 fiscal year, 263 dogs and cats were spayed or neutered through SAVE’s partnership with neighboring veterinary clinics. VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Last year, 350 volunteers provided over 4,000 hours of service to SAVE. From walking dogs, to cleaning cages, to helping with community events, this invaluable group is what makes SAVE possible. We are deeply grateful for their devotion, hard work, and support. HUMANE EDUCATION SAVE is committed to humane education because children who learn to respect animals at an early age grow into adults with compassion, respect, and empathy for all living creatures. Through our Humane Education program, Partners in Empathy Training (PET), we partner with schools and organizations to teach young children the basics of humane animal care, companion animal behavior and communication, overcoming fears, and staying safe around animals. This past year over 1,725 children were enrolled in our PET program at 22 area schools and programs. 2014-2015 Special Events ADOPTION DAYS SAVE volunteers held weekly off-site adoption days at PETCO, and other local venues. Adoption Days help to showcase a few of our furry friends and to help to raise awareness for SAVE. HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE The Holiday Boutique, held at The Bedens Brook Club on November 14, 2014, raised $34,500 for the shelter. Vendors including J. McLaughlin, Maverick Pet Partners, and Rendered Impressions gave guests a head start on their holiday shopping. The gourmet appetizers and buffet dinner were enjoyed by all. COMMUNIVERSITY On Sunday, April 26, 2014, SAVE participated in the Arts Council’s Communiversity in downtown Princeton. This annual event is another great way to promote adoptions, volunteerism and donations. SPRING GALA This year’s Gala Benefit, Bone Appetit, raised nearly $113,000 for the shelter. Hosted at the Princeton Airport on May 2, 2015, a Parisian theme made the evening both festive and fun. Guests bid on exciting live and silent auction items and danced the night away to great music. A total of 275 people attended the event. OTHER ACTIVITIES SAVE participated in numerous events throughout Mercer County including fairs, expos, parades, and more.
