Famous and well-loved Franciscan preacher of the Holy Name of Jesus. His bonfires of the vanities and conversions were shocking: gambling, usury, witchcraft and superstition were renounced. May 21: Blessed Charles de Mazenod (1782—1861). Charles hails from Aix-en-Provence; he became bishop of Marseilles in the footsteps of his uncle, and he went on to found the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He is one of the few saints whose parents were divorced. But what ferocious zeal for God! May 22: Saint Rita da Cascia (1377-1457) a widow who became an extraordinarily popular Augustinian nun and mystic. She is the patron saint of desperate cases – especially bad marriages. Her husband was a notoriously violent adulterer; he and their two sons died in a vendetta. May 23: St. John Baptist Rossi (1698-1764. This saint from Genoa became a priest in Rome. He worked and taught in a shelter for the homeless for 40 years. He lived in an attic in extreme poverty. May 24: St. David of Scotland (1085-1153). His mom? St. Margaret of Scotland! He became a devout King of Scotland at the age of 39. His best bud? St. Aelred de Rievaulx. May 25: St. Gregory VII Pope (1021-1085). I’ve prayed at his tomb in Salerno’s cathedral with devotion. He is the champion of the liberty of the Church from secular influence who died in exile. Saint Mary Magdalen de’ Pazzi (1566- 1607). One of the most fascinating mystic Carmelite nuns of all times lived her whole life in Florence. She was a pen-pal with mystic Florentine Dominican St. Catherine dei Ricci. Visit her incorrupt body at S. Maria degl’Angeli . St. Zenobius (310- 390). Patron bishop saint of Florence and friend of St. Ambrose and pope St Damasus. Visit his tomb at the Duomo. May 26: St Philip Neri (1515-15995). One of the most attractive saints of all times. A Florentine by birth, he left for Rome and founded the Oratorians. No one spread joy and confidence as this saint who started the Roman walks; he seemed to like nothing better than to be taken for a crazy eccentric. Friends? Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Camillus de Lellis, Charles Borromeo to name a few. EDUCATION SERVICE Quo Vadis Camp.
