No soldier should take their final walk alone. Legislative Corner By Rana Goodman This month I am wearing my Legislative Chair hat so that I can let you know about a great new feature that has been started in Carson City. Some of you might yawn, but for those of you that are interested in following some of the, are you ready for this, more than 600 bill drafts that will be heard this legislative session, here is the scoop. Anyone can “track 5 bill drafts” free of charge. This means if you go to the legislative site at http:// www.leg.state.nv.us/ and click on Personalized Legislative Tracking (on the right side of the home page) you will find many options of bill tracking where you can read a brief description of the bills, click a box showing your in- terest and then each time the bill is amended, or changed in any way you will be notified and given a draft of the changes. Should you wish to get involved, you can even go down to the Sawyer Building on Washington and Las Vegas Blvd. North and testify via teleconference to the legislature since you will also be notified when that bill comes before the committee hearing it. It is a little early now since the starting date of the 77th session of our legislature is February, but in two more weeks if you find any of those brief descriptions whet your appetite, click on the bill number and you will be taken to the full bill so that you can read it. As I say, five bills are available as a courtesy but with so many things of in- terest this session, I’d like to offer two alternatives; if you have a small group with political interest, you might want to chip in together and buy a tracking package to share. Alternatively, I have already purchased a large package for my needs and I will be more than happy to track some bills that some SHRW ladies have an interest in and report back through my column here. Today I added a few bills that looked like they might be of interest but full details won’t be available until 7 to 10 days. They are Assembly Bill 3 (AB 3) covering a tax on live entertainment. I’m wondering if that would affect our TGIF, our restaurant or our Performing Arts shows since we pay for them albeit a nominal sum. There is another Senate bill (SB55) “AN ACT relating to land use planning; revising provisions governing the subject matter of master plans; and providing other matters properly relating thereto” That could be the size of HOAs but, as I say, we won’t know until mid January. UPDATE: (This was received from the League of Women Voters today) The nuts and bolts of how to be effective and personally in- volved at the Nevada legislature in 2013 will be offered at the League of Women Voters Las Vegas Valley's Legislative Advo- cacy Workshop to be held MONDAY JAN. 7 from 6-8 pm at CSN West Charleston campus. Brian Davie of the Las Vegas Legislative Counsel Bureau will walk attendees through the advocacy features of the Nevada Legislative website with a dis- cussion on the upcoming legislative session and how to use social media to follow legislators, legislative staff, and the politi- cal news reporters. As far back as the Revolution and the Civil War, small numbers of determined women served on the battlefront as nurses, undercover soldiers and spies. Starting in 1901 and 1908, respectively, the Army and Navy officially accepted women as military nurses, and during World War I the Navy, Coast Eleanor Roosevelt Guard and Marine Corps enlisted several thousand Eleanor Roosevelt women for noncombat service.
