Philip enthralled us with his breath-taking accounts of managing catering and accommodation in the oil industry. He began his career in Barrow, then moved on to Algeria, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Baghdad, Dubai and Iraq. Since `retiring` he has pub- lished 7 fictional novels based on his time in the Middle East. We have no speaker for the October meeting as it will be our AGM, but in October we are looking forward to a cheese talk and tasting with John Natlacen, a cheese man from Kirkby Lonsdale. Stainmore WI meets at the Methodist Church Schoolroom in Brough on the second Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are always welcome. Brough looked amazing with the bikes, bunting, flags and the scarecrows. The atmosphere was carnival like with the help of Matthew Tiffany, the juggler and street entertainer, Leanne Duerden, the singer, and Bill Hutchinson with his vintage bicycles. I hope you all enjoyed the event and found it exciting. Pat Jones. Brough Parish Council CLIC Sargent Thank you very much to everyone who supported our table top and coffee morning on Saturday 24th August. We raised £490.80 for CLIC Sargent, thank you all so much. The usual items continue to be welcomed, that is, bedding (sheets, blankets, duvets, pillows etc), clothing (any material including leather), belts, handbags and shoes (please fasten shoes together in pairs), books (in a box if more than six), printer cartridges small or large, and mobile phones (working or not, but for your own security, please remove the SIM card if you know how). If you can’t manage the 3rd November, but have something for us, please phone me on 42135 to discuss alternatives. If you need bags for your offerings (and they DO appreciate it if their official bags are used) I have a large supply so please give me a phone call on 42135 to agree how you can collect them. Yes, I know it is the weekend before Bonfire Night, when many people have pre-5th fireworks, so the additional effort you might make to give support will be very much appreciated. Also, if at any other time you have special circumstances which would result in having to store a large number of bags (say 12 or more) till the next drop-in (if you are doing a house clearance before moving, or after a death), please call me to arrange bags and a subsequent special visit from GNAA’s van at a time and place to suit your convenience. This is something we have done a number of times. Dave Williams 017683 42135 Fitter Me is a gentle, seated and walking exercise class for everyone. It is also fun and you only do what you feel you can. However, to keep this going we do need people to support it. The next class is on Thursday 3rd October from 10.30 to 11.30am in Brough Methodist church schoolroom. After that we will decide on future dates. Heather 42476 New Defibrillator for Warcop Warcop Parish Council recently decided to use some of its funds to purchase a fourth defibrillator to extend coverage in Warcop in case of emergencies. It will be located in the old BT phone box, which we have been discussing what to do with for some time. We hope its central location will offer greater access for other parts of the village. At some point we hope to run some defibrillator training at the Parish Hall for local residents who would like to know how to use the defibs. We now have defibrillators in Bleatarn on the Deighton’s house, in Sandford on the side of David White’s farm and two in Warcop – one at the Parish Hall and one in the old phone box.
