Do you esteem them or do they make you ill at ease?... If you note anything to to which your heart has less inclination, look for the source of such dislike and discover its cause.” - St Francis de Sales TODAY’S READINGS SAINTS & SPECIAL OBSERVANCES First Reading — Job finds life on earth to be Sunday: Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time; World drudgery; he is filled with restlessness Day for Consecrated Life; Scout Sunday (Job 7:1-4, 6-7). Monday: St. Jerome Emiliani; St. Josephine Bakhita; International Day of Prayer & Psalm — Praise the Lord, who heals the Awareness Against Human Trafficking brokenhearted (Psalm 147). Wednesday: St. Scholastica Second Reading — Woe to me if I do not preach the Thursday: Our Lady of Lourdes; World Day of the gospel. I have become all things Sick to all, to save at least some (1 Friday: Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday; Lunar New Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23). Year 4719 Gospel — Jesus cured many who were sick Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary with various diseases (Mark 1:29-39). THE GOOD NEWS The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. Today’s readings begin with a few verses from the book of Job. First, Job complains that his nights drag on endlessly. Then, worse READINGS FOR THE WEEK yet, “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; / they come Monday: Gn 1:1-19; Ps 104:1-2a, 5-6, 10, 12, 24, to an end without hope” (Job 7:6). Not exactly encouraging, 35c; Mk 6:53-56 these lamentations, not when taken alone. Most of us have been there, though, and the antidote is the Tuesday: Gn 1:20 — 2:4a; Ps 8:4-9; Mk 7:1-13 “good news” that Paul found so compelling that “an obligation Wednesday: Gn 2:4b-9, 15-17; Ps 104:1-2a, 27-28, has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!” 29bc-30; Mk 7:14-23 (1 Corinthians 9:16). Paul felt driven to announce the gospel to Thursday: Gn 2:18-25; Ps 128:1-5; Mk 7:24-30 as many people as possible, “to save at least some” (9:22). This good news is the mystery of the life, death, and resurrection Friday: Gn 3:1-8; Ps 32:1-2, 5-7; Mk 7:31-37 of Jesus Christ, who lifted Simon Peter’s mother-in-law from her Saturday: Gn 3:9-24; Ps 90:2-6, 12-13; Mk 8:1-10 sickbed with a mere touch of his hand. “The whole town was Sunday: Lv 13:1-2, 44-46; Ps 32:1-2, 5, 11; 1 Cor gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various 10:31 — 11:1; Mk 1:40-45 diseases, and he drove out many demons” (Mark 1:33–34)). Our woes and demons are as real as Job’s, and Jesus is our savior. copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. This column is currated by Mary Jo Kunzmann, Judy Reilly, and Nancy Jarvis with the hope that it will help you on your journey to grow as disciples of Jesus. In today’s Gospel, Jesus cured many illnesses demonstrating his healing power and compassion for us. Later, he rose early and went off to a deserted place to pray. Even Jesus needed to reconnect with his Father and pray for strength to carry out his ACA REPORT FOR OUR PARISH mission. What a great lesson through January 2021 and example for us! This year, in the midst of a world-wide pandemic, the call to pray for the sick is urgent. The National Association of Catholic Chaplains has sample petitions that can be used in the Universal Prayer / Prayers of the Faithful that can be used on February 11, and the weekend before or after.
