DATA DICTIONARY Column Header Description County The name of the Pennsylvania county where the surface hole location of the well is located. Municipality The name of the Pennsylvania municipality where the surface hole location of the well is located. Operator Name The organization name designated as the well operator or operator on the permit application or well registration. The name given to a well by the Well Operator, usually the landowner at the time of permitting, which does not change. The Farm Name and Well Number normally uniquely identify the well for Farm Name the operator. Latitude The latitudinal value, in decimal degrees, for the well. Longitude The longitudinal value, in decimal degrees, for the well. Formation Name The name of the formation from which the unconventional well production is permitted (e.g., Marcellus, Utica, Helderberg, Mandata, Rhinestreet, Burket, Geneseo). A yes or no indicator that will represent whether the well is a horizontal well, meaning a well that starts off being drilled vertically but which is eventually curved to become horizontal (or near Horizontal horizontal) in order to parallel a particular geologic formation, or not. Includes intentionally deviated wells. API The American Petroleum Institute (API) well number or API number is a "unique, permanent, numeric identifier" assigned to each well drilled for oil and gas. Well Permit Number A unique number assigned by DEP to each well permit application (first 10 digits of the API number). The state of the well as of the report date. Active: Drilling of the well has commenced. The well may, or may not, be producing. Operator Reported Not Drilled: The operator has reported that either the permit has expired and the well has not been drilled, or that, although the permit is still valid, they no longer intend to drill the well and wish to cancel the permit. Plugged OG Well: The well has been lawfully plugged. They well may, or may not, have produced prior to plugging. Well Status Proposed But Never Materialized: 1) A permit application was submitted, but the permit was never issued. 2) The well was entered into the database in error. 3) A permit had been issued, however Department staff have determined that the well was never drilled. Regulatory Inactive Status: The Department has granted inactive status for the well. (Any well that has not been used to produce, extract or inject any gas, petroleum or other liquid within the preceding 12 months, or any well for which the equipment necessary for production, extraction or injection has been removed, or any well, considered dry, not equipped for production within 60 days after drilling, redrilling or deepening, is, by definition, an abandoned well and shall be plugged upon abandonment pursuant to the Oil & Gas Act. However, the definition of an abandoned well shall not include any well granted inactive status.)
