Systematic account on fishfs of Bastar is not much known! 'except the referenqe 01 Hora (1938). During tlre period 1978-1980 field! sur.veys in Bastar district were conducted and representative exampllis of fi'sh from th'e. localities detailed! in the list of collrecting stations were collected. The, present paper deals on the aforesaid material whiCh comprises ] 00 species belonging to 45 genera and 19. familiies. Of these, two ~peciesJ viz., Ciupis01110 bastari and Panthls saberi have belen established (Datta and! Ka.rnlakar, 1980, 1981). Dubey and Mehra (1.959) worked on the fish and fisheries of Chambal river and listed! 71 species of fishes. Hora (1938) reported 13 species of fishes from Bailadila rang~J Bastar d~S:trict. Hora (1940) described 43 species of fislhes from the headwaters of th'c, Mahanadi river, Raipur district, Central Provinces. Hora and Nair (1941) report~d 40 species of fishes fronl the Satpum range, Hoshang.a bad distrj;ct~ Ce.ntral Provinces. Soltli (1959, 60) found 35 sp'ecies of fisihes in Bhopftl lower lake and 43 spec~es of fishes in Bhopal upper lake respectively. Menon (1951) discuss~dI onl the role of East~rn Ghats in the distribution, of Malayan fauna and flora to penin­ sular India. The present fish collectjons were made in the head waters of Godavari and Mahanadi River Systems, namely, Indravati river, Saberi rJver, Mahanadi, Dudlhnadi ~nd Kukri (Boor) river. Collections were also made mOlll lakes, tanks and! othe,r watennasses. TIre general topography of the area is nlainly mount'ainous intersected with rivers and rivulets. The valleys are undulating with dry, m~xed, deci­ duous fo[est'es consisting mainly of Sal. Teak, Mahua, Tamalrind', Tendu t Jamun, Mango, Peepal, Palm, Balnboo, Babbul and valri'ous kinds of creepers. The undcrcanopp consists of grasses (ghonar, kusad).
