A Resolution to Honor and Remember the Stonewall Riots (June 28, 1969)

A RESOLUTION TO HONOR AND REMEMBER THE STONEWALL RIOTS (JUNE 28, 1969) WHEREAS, On June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, members of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community stood up with bravery and courage against brutal legal oppression and police harassment; and WHEREAS, The historic events of June 28, 1969, gave birth to our modern movement for LGBTQ equality and the successes we continue to celebrate today; and WHEREAS, LGBTQ people across the United States first commemorated the Stonewall Riots with the first Christopher Street Liberation Day on June 28, 1970; and WHEREAS, LGBTQ people across the United States and world each June continue to commemorate this historic day, which also gave rise to our modern-day Christopher Street Liberation Day and Pride events; and WHEREAS, Charlotte Pride, Inc., is a non-profit organization incorporated in the State of North Carolina, which presents an annual Pride festival and parade marking and commemorating this history; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: The Executive Committee of Charlotte Pride, Inc., pauses to remember the memory and history of those who came before us – especially those members of oppressed and marginalized communities including drag queens, transgender community members, male prostitutes, people of color and homeless LGBTQ youth –who stood bravely against oppression during the Stonewall Riots; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: The Executive Committee of Charlotte Pride, Inc., calls on all members of our community to join with us as we commemorate this historic event and endeavors to fulfill our mission to empower all LGBTQ and allied people to stand as unique individuals and together as a community, with the purpose of uniting as a creative, social, economic and influential force.
