Highlights included the Community Choir singing in church on schools and service providers will have (at least) made a start on Easter Day. Most recently the band welcomed six of the Manor House tightening up the ways in which they obtain, hold and use people’s residents as part of the “Keep in Touch” event. They participated fully in personal data. We, and our legislators, are rightly concerned as to who the music making playing percussion instruments and singing choruses of knows what about who we are. songs. We all shared a lovely, happy and positive time together. Which begs the question: ‘Who am I?’ Am I the sum of a mix of chemicals that happen to have fallen together in a wonderful way to create humanity - and me within it? Or am I just the aggregate of the things I buy online: of shopping preferences recorded by my store-card every time it is swiped in the supermarket? Or again, I know that I have a continuity with the young ‘Teenage Me’ growing up in Hereford, yet I am no longer that person – I am the same, but different. ‘Who I am’ changes and develops through my interaction with other people, places and experiences. People have, we are told, ‘plastic brains’ that are shaped by our upbringing, we change over time. What seems to make me ‘who I am’ is my relationships: with people, places and things. Ask someone to tell you who they are and they will By the time this magazine is published the choir will have also give you their name (given to them by others), their important participated in a further “Keep in Touch” day and both choir and band relationships (son, daughter, husband, wife etc) and the place where they will have joined forces for a concert at the Methodist church in support of live or work. It is coming up to the end of my first week and already I have met many of the parents on the playground and at the gate and have been touched by their kind words of welcome. My family and I have been coming to Barnard Castle for many, many years; since our daughter was born in fact, and she is now nearly 18! We have spent many hours in Curlew’s Bookshop where Eleanor developed a passion for reading. Maurice and Joyce at Curlew’s have gone on to become family friends and Barnard Castle has a special place in our hearts. So becoming Head Teacher feels like coming home, especially as I first trained to be a teacher at High Force Education, based in Green Lane. What I can tell you already is that this is a super school and it has a fabulous staffing team, they have great relationships with the children and they clearly want the very best for them. The school has a wonderful Chair of Governors in the Reverend Alec Harding from St. Mary’s; he is committed to ensuring the children grow up with strong Christian values and have the very best education we can deliver. The Christian ethos here at Green Lane is what makes it so special, helping the children grow into wonderfully well rounded, mature, polite individuals who are a credit both to the school and the local community. It will be my job to see these values embedded even more and to see us provide an even better education to the children so that more and more of them leave the school with the highest moral standards and with the highest educational achievements possible. Schools today only get stronger by working more closely with parents and the local community. I would like to open our doors to the community even more than we currently do so expect to see some special events happening over the coming year… Jesus taught us to use our talents to make the world a happier and better place 7 © 8 for others, we will be helping the children let their talents blossom! Can I Bishop Paul’s Prayer Walk through Barnard finish by saying again that I have taken charge of a fabulous school and I Castle Deanery want the very best for the children it serves. I hope to meet you soon! Since arriving in the diocese in 2014 Bishop Paul The very best of wishes, has set aside time in his diary for prayer walks in each of the diocese’s deaneries. This month he arrives in Barnard Castle Deanery and he will be Rob Goffee with us for 4 days. The itinerary is still being created but closer to the Walk it Head Teacher will be published in church so that you can pray for the walkers (and those Green Lane Church of England Primary School they meet) and /or join in some parts of the walk yourself. + Paul’s visit has been timed to coincide with our Deanery Confirmation service. We have four candidates from the parish for confirmation this year News from the belfry: May 2018 and the service will take place at St. Andrew’s Winston at 7.00pm on th Big Wilf’s Bell Muffles! Thursday 10 May (Ascension Day). All are welcome – our candidates would welcome your support and if you have never been into St. Andrew’s Every year as Remembrance Day approaches, there is a feeling of dread then you have missed a treat.
