New South Wales ENVIRONMENTAL READING MATERIALS $86,000 The project involved,the production of a series of more than 30 books to cater for students from We Waa,-Burren,Junction, Pilnga and Gwabegar. The boOks depict local characters and situations and are illustrated with colour photographs. The books are designed for students from Kindergarten to ear 6. ,eFour titles are suitable for slow-developing children in Years 7 and 8. EXPERIENTIAL READING MATERIALS $5,000 A series of books based on life in Lightping Collarengbri and Goodooga is being prepared for Kindergarten to Year 2. The books use the children's language patterns and vocabulary as much as possible. A manual is to be produced to explain the rationale of the series and to offe'r suggestions for using it. EXTENSION TEACHING PROGRAM $35,000 A series of learning e xperiences for talented students is being conducted in maths, natural science, writing, art, craft, drama,. soccer, rugby league, tennis, netball and hockey. For four days the selected students take a concentrated series of lessons in " their area of interest. Each group is accompanied by teachers and parents who assist in the program. The booklet contains 4 -descriptions of a majority of the projects funded in declared areas in'1978 and statisticalinform- .ation about the operati,on of the Program. A, The projects represent endeavours by,country communities to address educational problems and take action to overcome them. The search for more effective and cost-efficient ways of delivering educational_ services in countryareas is leading to the involvement of communitiesin appreciating and-using local resources. INDEX V- 6 S 4 OVERVIEW THE DISADVANTAGED COUNTRY AREAS PROGRAM The, Disadvantaged School Program was ebtabli%hed by the Schools',._ Commission in 1974 in response to thestatutory requirement to take into account 'the needs of'disadvantagedschoo.lsand of students in all schools who are disadvantagedin their education. for social, 'economic, ethnic geographicalor other reasons'. The initial priority was for schools indepressed inner -city areas. An'index of disadvantage basedon socio-economic Census data was,uted to identify school neighbourhoodsin greatest need. I 1977 the Program was broadened to includea disadvantaged co try areas element to address the special circumstances-0flcountry areas. The funds available for disadvantaged cchintry areas in.1978are, detailed in Attachment 1. The bisadvantaged Country Areas PrOgrambegan with a limited 'number of areas in each State being selectedaccording to their relative poverty, special,need for improvedeductional provi'bion,and lack of Oppottunities or employmeht and training for young people. The Program differs from the Disadvantaged Schools Program in that whole areas rathec thdp individual . schools have been identified. All th6'schoo1s In the declared areas, Primary and sedondary,.government andnon-government are expected to sharp the services andfacilities provided under ,. the PIogram and 10 coopbrate,in devisingplans for, improvement. The CommisAon's aim is to support andstimulate'rural communities in the search for new and improvedways of educating their children. Teachers and community peopleare encouraged to ide4ify and use theresources already in their communities and toiuse special funding forsupplementing or mobilising these.
