HOW TO PREPARE YOUR RECYCLABLE MATERIALS ITEM DO’S DON’TS Paper Recyclables (need to separate from containers) NEWSPAPER Do put in paper bags or tied bundles. Don’t put newspaper in plastic bags. Do include colored and glossy inserts. Don’t set newspaper out loose. MIXED PAPER Do put the mixed paper in paper bags NOT ACCEPTED or boxes. Hardcover books Do bundle your newspaper and mixed egg cartons paper. paper tissues Acceptable Mixed Paper paper plates Magazines, Catalogs, Paper Bags paper cups Junk Mail (glassine windows “OK”) gift wrapping Computer Paper (copied paper) waxed cartons Stationary and lined paper juice packs tablet paper (all colors) paper towels file folders and fax paper Carbon paper school papers –all colors CORRUGATED CARDBOARD Must be flattened completely and tied in a bundle. Will not take unflattened boxes. Must cut cardboard to no larger than 3 ft. by 3 ft. Container Recyclables (need to separate from paper) “TIN” STEEL CANS Food/beverage containers ONLY. Must be “magnetic”. Do rinse, OK to leave label on. Do put cut-off lid inside can and FLATTEN. ALUMINUM Do rinse. (cans, foil, food trays) GLASS- clear and colored OK to mix all colors – clear, brown, No broken glass. (bottles and jars) greens, tints, etc. No window glass, mirrors, drinking glasses, Pyrex, Crystal, ceramics, light bulbs, or fluorescent tubes. PLASTIC CONTAINERS AND Must have 1 to 7 recycling code. No Styrofoam; throw in trash. JUGS Jugs, milk, water, cider. No “peanuts” or plastic bags. Do rinse and flatten. No motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides, Must remove and discard caps, rings. herbicide containers. Examples- Soda, liquor, peanut butter, (throw in trash) mustard, spices, margarine, cord oil, shampoo, baby wipes, laundry detergent, bleach, ammonia, cleaning liquids, peroxide. The Shirley Recycling Drop-Off Center will be open on Saturdays only 9 AM to 3 PM. Residents may bring their leaves and grass clippings (not brush) on Saturdays 9 AM to 3 PM. It is illegal to throw away old TV’s and computer monitors. TV’s, computers, air conditioners, refrigerators, and tires may be brought to the Recycling Center for a fee. If you do not have a recycling bin any plastic container can be used. .
