Words, words, words! They form the floor, the walls, and the ceiling of our existence.” Indeed, the world around us and our internal world—our thoughts, our desires, our concerns—all cry out, creating a tremendous clamor and clutter of noise that often obscures the whisper of God. At the Pepperdine Bible Lectures this year, we shall endeavor to break through the wordy world and once again “Hear the Word of the Lord,” as He speaks to us through the prophet Jeremiah, as He calls us back to Himself. How gracious is our God! How patient and longsuffering! How like a spring of living water! And how like straying sheep we often are, unconsciously drifting from the Shepherd of our souls. This week in May will be a call to silence, a call to listen again to the God of Jeremiah, a call to return to God’s Word, God’s Will, God’s marvelous ways. The call is to be both listener and speaker: to hear and receive the Word of the Lord, then faithfully speak it through our lives to all who will listen. We must acknowledge our tendencies toward evil and our desire for pleasant prophecy. These days in May will usher in springtime in Malibu, a glorious season in a lovely place. My prayer is that these days will also witness a wonderful “springtime for the soul” for thousands of seekers at the Bible Lectures. We trust that our time together will be a season of repentance and a day of great renewal. Welcome to the campus of Pepperdine University. God has blessed us with a beautiful place in which students may learn and grow, and we gladly share it with you, our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. We invite you to enjoy the nooks and crannies and the broad vistas of Pepperdine, and to seek the quiet places where you may meet with God…and hear the Word of the Lord. Andrew K. Benton President As a Christian University, Pepperdine Affirms THAT GOD IS That God is revealed uniquely in Christ That the educational process may not, with impunity, be divorced from the divine process That the student, as a person of infinite dignity, is the heart of the educational enterprise That the quality of student life is a valid concern of the University That truth, having nothing to fear from investigation, should be pursued relentlessly in every discipline That spiritual commitment, tolerating no excuse for mediocrity, demands the highest standards of academic excellence That freedom, whether spiritual, intellectual, or economic, is indivisible That knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service Message from the Lectures Team Sixty-four years of Pepperdine Bible Lectures—what a remarkable heritage of spiritual service to God’s people! These wonderful conferences began before most of us were born. Think of all the great Christians who have taught or learned of our Lord in those years—many of whom are now with the Savior. And after nearly six and a half decades, Pepperdine University now presents the largest program in its history, with 272 classes and fifteen singing and drama groups. In addition, we are excited to present seven theme lecturers who will lead us on a journey through the challenging prophecy of Jeremiah. These servants of God—Glenn Pemberton, John York, Harold Shank, Yukikazu Obata, Dan Rodriguez, Monte Cox, and David Fleer—are spiritual men with the maturity and ability to expound the Scriptures and inspire us into action. We anticipate welcoming participants from 40 states, along with attendees from more than 20 nations around the world. It is sure to be a historic occasion, and we trust that you will be on hand for this great spiritual feast. Our Bible Lectures theme for 2007 is “Hear the Word of the Lord: Jeremiah’s Call to Renewal.” It will be a powerful and timely message for God’s people who are often tempted and lulled by the mesmerizing melodies of this world, soothed by false prophets as in the day of Jeremiah, and too often satisfied with self-congratulations. Jeremiah calls for the one thing we are reluctant to offer: repentance. We are not anxious to admit that we disappoint God at times, even though we are all guilty of drifting from our first love. How can we be continually Rick Gibson, Tami Williamson, Jerry Rushford, restored? How can we live in God’s land, both now and Kym Dildine, and Erin Newton in ages to come? The 2007 Pepperdine Bible Lectures will be a perfect time to return to the Lord in complete sincerity and begin again to love Him and serve Him with our whole heart. Our Bible Lectures theme for 2007 is Perhaps our campus in Malibu is a metaphor of the “land of milk and honey” of Jeremiah’s day. Perhaps God “Hear the Word of the Lord: Jeremiah’s Call to Renewal.” is calling us, His people, to return to Him and live in the land with gratitude and devotion. Those who worked so hard to provide the Malibu home for Pepperdine It will be a powerful and timely message for believed with all their heart that it was none other than God Himself who ultimately provided this miraculous God’s people who are often tempted and lulled by the place.
