INTRODUCTION TO THE 2020 MORRIS COUNTY MANUAL Ann F. Grossi, Esq. County Clerk It is with pleasure that I present the 2020 Morris County Manual. This year we celebrate the Women’s Suffrage Movement and this book is dedicated to those women who fought and were jailed simply for demanding the right to vote. It is a fitting tribute because 2020 marks the 100th Anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution which was enacted in 1919, and became effective in 1920. Morris County is known as the Military Capital of the Revolution and in that spirit the women of Morris County showed their fighting resolve by playing a significant part in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Two women in particular, both from Morristown played prominent parts. Alison Low Turnbull Hopkins, a woman of privilege, and Julia Hurlbut, who served in leadership roles in numerous suffragette organizations, were arrested and brutally jailed in the Workhouse along with other Suffragettes for merely participating in the 1917 White House protests. Both women were later pardoned by President Wilson. Although not from Morris County, the advent of the women’s vote also brought momentous changes in the New Jersey Assembly. In 1921, women took over the New Jersey Assembly gallery to witness the entrance of Jeannie C. Van Ness and Margaret Laird, both Republicans from Essex County who were the first two women elected to the New Jersey Assembly. Their election culminated a fight that lasted over 100 years for women to enjoy the same voting rights as their male counterparts. The manual has been published by the Morris County Clerk’s Office annually since 1906. Over the course of the last century the manual has undergone many changes to reflect the county’s evolution. However, one thing has remained constant; the purpose of the county manual, which is to provide a centralized resource for residents regarding their government. I hope the manual becomes a valuable resource for you too. ANN F. GROSSI, ESQ.
