H. himantopus is now only attributed to the Eurasian / African species and H. leucocephalus is now regarded as a separate species that occurs in Australasia and numerous islands of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Morphometrics: Adult Male Adult Female Wing: 227 – 246 mm 213 – 234 mm 8th Primary: 139 – 153 mm 133 – 151 mm Tail: 64 – 77 mm 65 – 75 mm Bill: 60.5 – 67.1 mm 56.5 – 65.0 mm Tarsus: 114 – 125 mm 92.6 – 117.0 mm Middle toe: 37.7 – 45.4 mm 32.8 – 36.7 mm Weight: 139 – 208 g 138 – 169 g Ageing: Adult Immature Juvenile Head & neck: mostly white, hindneck hindneck, upper nape & crown dirty grey (see & lower nape black; ear coverts dark grey, illustrations); forming dark cap; Upper wing: black with greenish gloss, often retains dark brown blackish, finely scalloped, fades to black-brown; juvenile remiges; fades to dark brown. Iris: crimson red; reddish-brown; dark or blackish-brown; Legs: red when breeding, other dark pink; pale pink, initially tinged times dark pink; yellowish; Hatch in natal down and rapidly grow and mount into juvenile plumage (J) or (1); Moult to immature plumage may be completed during first Autumn, but some not until second Spring, so age immatures (2-); Adult plumage is attained at approximately one year old. Thus age adults as (2+). Sexing: Sexing of adults is not always possible, but scapulars and upper back of adult females is black- brown, whereas fresh plumage of males is black with a greenish gloss.
