Profile Photos of Present Teaching & Administrative Staff 2 Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad A College for knowledge Truth will make you free PROFILE OF THE COLLEGE Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad, was founded on 3rd April 1964 under the inspiration of the Catholic Diocese of Palai by Major Archiepiscopal Marth Mariam Archdecon Pilgrim Church, Kuravilangad. The parish, Major Archiepiscopal Marth Mariam Archdecon Pilgrim Church, Kuravilangad, has etched her name in the academia of Kerala by establishing two High Schools and two L. P. Schools in the latter half of the 18th century and a Higher Secondary School in 1998. The former President of India, Dr. K.R. Narayanan and Chevalier Dr. P. J. Thomas, a renowned Economist in India did their schooling in these institutions. Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, it is recognized under section 2(f) and 12 B of the UGC Act 1956. The great visionaries, H.E.Mar Sebastian Vayalil, the then Bishop of the Diocese of Palai and Rev. Fr. Paul Alappattu, the then Vicar of St. Mary’s Forane Church, Kuravilangad, who spearheaded the founding of the college, had in their minds the glorious task of dispelling darkness and spreading the light of true wisdom all round, irrespective of caste, creed, language or religion through the dissemination of knowledge and other skills that would mould the young generation into exemplary citizens well equipped to face the challeges of the times. True to its vision and mission, the college today has emerged as a knowledge hub and a leading centre of academic excellence, educating and transforming thousands of students who hail from a purely Agrarian, Rural background. Situated in a rural milieu, in the heart of a minority community, the college aims at academic excellence in all spheres of learning, providing intellectual, moral, social, cultural and spiritual guidance to the young generation with a view to making them God-fearing, patriotic, altruistic and self-confident in life. The college is currently guided by the able leadership of H. E. Bishop Dr. Joseph Kallarangattu as its patron, Very Rev. Dr. Joseph Thadathil as its Arch Priest & Manager and Dr. Jojo K. Joseph as its Principal. Calendar 2018-19 3 Truth will make you free Located at Kuravilangad, in Kottayam District on a lush green eco-friendly campus of 12.5 acres/ 56585sq.mts, the college houses 9 Post Graduate Departments and 13 Graduate Departments. In 1981, the Post Graduate Course in Commerce was started. P.G. courses in English and Malayalam were inducted in 1998 and 1999 respectively. In respective years, Departments of Chemistry (2002), Botany (2004), Physics (2004) started self-financing PG programmes. 3 self-financing courses, M. Sc. Mathematics, B. A. Communicative English and B. Com. with Taxation courses began in 2013. In 2014 PG course in Mathematics was started. The College conducts 3 UGC aided ADD-ON Courses and 7 job-oriented certificate courses. All the departments offer UGC sponsored remedial enrichment programmes for weak students. Coaching for UGC/JRF/NET/Civil Service examinations is provided by all the P.G. departments. The college offers training in GD, interview skills, personality development programmes and placement assistance through the Career and Placement Cell of our College. The college has distinguished itself in research and consultancy activities. Out of the 57 permanent teachers 21 hold Ph.D and 23 hold M.Phil. degrees and many are pursuing research towards Ph.D. In addition, four Ph.D holders and 5 M.Phil holders are serving in the self -financing Under Graduate & Post-Graduate Departments. It is worth highlighting that 99% of our students come from rural, agrarian backgrounds. Department of Malayalam became an approved Research Centre known as ‘Nidhirickal Manikathanar Research Centre’ in 2004. Presently the department has six Research Guides. In 2013, the Department of English also became an approved Research Centre with three Research Guides. Presently, 64 Research Scholars are carrying out research in the Research Departments of Malayalam and English. Over the years, when rank system existed, the college has bagged 56 University Ranks, several distinctions (80% & above), numerous first classes (60% & above) and the pass percentage in UG and PG is not less than 90 percent throughout. In 2013 the science departments received DST-FIST grant to the tune of Rs. 70 lakhs.
