Policy Statement Amendment Project (Islands 2050) Update to Bowen Island Municipal Council February 8, 2021 1 Acknowledgement Islands Trust acknowledges that the land on which we gather is within the territories of the səl̓ilwətaʔɬ, shíshálh, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm First Nations. 2 What we are Learning? Islands Trust is looking at the land and waters in a new way that is inclusive of preserving and protecting for all not just some. 3 4 5 Islands Trust Policy Statement Includes guiding principles for Trust Council Identifies three main goals: 1. Ecosystem protection 2. Stewardship of resources 3. Healthy and sustainable communities Includes three types of policies to achieve the Islands Trust object: 1. Commitments of Trust Council 2. Directives to LTCs and IMs 3. Recommendation (to others) 6 7 8 How the Policy Statement applies to Bowen Island Municipality Bowen Island Municipality must: 1. submit its Official Community Plan to the Islands Trust Executive Committee for approval 2. refer non-OCP bylaws that include a reference to a matter included in the Islands Trust Policy Statement to the Executive Committee for assessment of whether it is contrary to or at variance with the Policy Statement 9 2019 Engagement 10 2019 Engagement 11 2019 Engagement 12 13 14 Who Are We Engaging With?
