Page 7 THE ART OF BOB PEAK One of the most imaginative and prolific illustrators of the 20th century, Robert Peak revolutionized advertising in the film industry and is considered the “Father of the modern movie poster.” Robert Peak totally transformed the approach to movie advertising from basic collages of film stills or head shots to flamboyant artistic illustrations. United Artist hired Peak in 1961 to help promote West Side Story. His innovative solution-painting characters and scenes into a single montage became the first of over 100 such posters, among them My Fair Lady, Camelot, Rollerball, Star Trek, Superman and Apocalypse Now. Peak was not short on editorial assignments with 45 covers of Time Magazine featuring his illustrations-most notably the portrait of Mother Teresa. For the first time, a comprehensive oversize 380 page coffee table book on the Life and Art of Bob Peak. The book includes over 600 images of works spanning a forty year career with many never before seen illustrations along with his many iconic illustrations for the Movies, Major Periodicals, National Ad Campaigns, Time Magazine Covers, Fashion Advertising, Sports Advertising and more. Bob Peak came on the New York Advertising Art Scene in the early 1950's. He went on to become one of the most prolific illustrators of the 21st century. His artistic vision represented a bridge between the era of Norman Rockwell and Coby Whitmore, with its emphasis on technique, to more direct ways of making pictures, greater use of line, and a more startling, bolder palette. In 1961 he was named "Artist of the Year" by the Artist Guild of New York. In 1977 he was inducted into the prestigious New York Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. In 1992 after over 100 Movie Campaigns including his iconic images for such films as, My Fair Lady, Camelot, Star Trek, and Apocalypse Now, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hollywood Reporters for his contribution to the film industry. This is a major acknowledgement of the research found on this website as it is uncommon for a commercially supported website to be linked to a state facility. The linked page also contains links to LearnAboutMoviePosters.com and MoviePosterDataBase.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Movie Poster Collecting Workshop LAMP will be presenting its first workshop on collecting movie posters at the upcoming Lake Charles Film Festival. This workshop will be part of Hollywood on the Bayou’s participation in the festival, which will include an hour long Power Point presentation on Louisiana’s film history and a full exhibit on the subject featuring movie posters, lobby cards and stills from our extensive collection. Page 10 FINALLY -- GUINNESS RECOGNIZES STEVE SANSWEET’S MASSIVE STAR WARS COLLECTION After years of amassing over 300,000 artifacts from the Star Wars saga, Steve Sansweet, super collector and former Lucasfilm employee, has been certified by Guinness Book of Records as having the world’s largest Star Wars collection. And the collective response from the collecting community is … it’s about damn time! The "Star Wars" films have inspired collectors of memorabilia in a way that few other movie franchises have achieved. It therefore takes something special for one individual to be named as having the world's largest collection of memorabilia related to the series. The super fan who is currently able to lay claim to that title is Steve Sansweet, a journalist and author, and president of Rancho Obi-Wan, a non-profit museum in Petaluma, northern California that houses his collection of an estimated 300,000 unique "Star Wars" items.
