Why what? Why MOISES KAUFMAN The Laramie Project? Before I could even utter a word people would give me And the MEMBERS of TECTONIC THEATER PROJECT their reasons: Director What—are you trying to make a political statement? Is this some sort of re- Michael Schwendemann sponse to what is happening in North Carolina? Are you trying to sway new voters in an election year? Do you have some sort of agenda? The answer to Student Director Technical Director each one of these questions—no. I wanted to tell a story—a story that should Maddie Haughwout Rob Krakehl never need to be told—the story of a man that went to his death for no other Set Dressing Backdrop Program reason than being himself. It doesn’t matter that Matthew Shepard was gay Dana Freed Grosh Backdrops & Drapery Ellen Fleury —what matters is the simple truth that in America today people are being Costumes killed simply for who they are—whether it’s their gender, their religion, their Dana Freed lifestyle, their color or occupation. Violence seems to have replaced baseball as America’s national pastime. How do we stop the bleeding? By maybe realizing The US West World Premiere was produced by that we should celebrate our differences rather than use them as a vehicle The Denver Center Theatre Company of judgment and hatred. The Drama Club Parents During the year-and-a-half development of the play, members of the company and I traveled For taking the ride to Laramie six times to conduct interviews with the people of the town. We transcribed and edited the interviews, then conducted several workshops in which the members of the company The Secretaries presented material and acted as dramaturgs in the creation of the play. For keeping me on task & getting us everything we need As the volume of material grew with each additional trip to Laramie, a small writers’ group from Eric Reynolds within the company began to work closely with me to further organize and edit the material, conduct additional research in Laramie, and collaborate on the writing of the play. This group was For looking out for us led by Leigh Fondakowski as Head Writer, with Stephen Belber and Greg Pierotti as Associate Writers. Brenden Cusack As we got closer to the play’s first production in Denver, the actors, including Stephen Belber and & Greg Pierotti, turned their focus to performance, while Leigh Fondakowski continued to work with me on drafts of the play, as did Stephen Wangh, who by then had joined us as an Associate James Polansky Writer and “bench coach.” For the support Cast Kelli Simpkins ........................................................Isabella Cahill Stephen Belber ...........................................................
