The Institute of Gender and Women Studies University of Pretoria 3rd ALBERTINA SISULU MEMORIAL LECTURE AND Gender and Human Rights issues in Contemporary South Africa SPEAKER PROFILE Elinor Sisulu Elinor Sisulu is a writer, human rights activist and political analyst. She was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in March 1958 and grew up mostly in Bulawayo. Elinor is a member of the Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa (OSISA) board, the National Arts Festival board, the Independent Media Trust of Zimbabwe, and the Anthony Sampson board. She is also a trustee of the Heal Zimbabwe Trust, a South African-based trust that facilitates humanitarian assistance for Zimbabwean refugees in South Africa. Pregs Govender Deputy Chair: South African Human Rights Commission Born in Durban, South Africa; Pregs Govender is the Author of "Love and Courage, A Story of Insubordination". After the first democratic elections in 1994, she served as an ANC MP in the National Assembly. She is widely respected for her role in advancing gender responsive budgets. As Chair of Parliament's Committee on Women, she ensured that most of its priorities aimed at advancing women's rights and gender equality, were enacted. She resigned in 2002, after holding public hearings on HIV/AIDS in 2001 and being the only MP to register opposition to the arms deal in the Defence Budget vote. In 2007-2009 she chaired the Independent Panel Assessment of Parliament. Nadi Albino Nadi Albino has 15 years of relevant experience in international development, including in: education, early childhood development, health (HIV and AIDS) and social sectors. Ms. Albino is currently working on a PHD in Political Economy with the Swiss Management Centre, has an MA in Education and Change Management (University of Sussex), a post graduate in Policy Analysis from the University of Maastricht, a post graduate in Education Sector Reform from the World Bank Institute, a post graduate in Business and General Management from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) and a BA in Art. Hameda Deedat Hameda is an independent researcher known to the WRC as a CSO researcher. She is an advocate for gender equity and social justice particularly in the water sector. She is currently serving on the NSC for formation of CMA' as a civil society representative. I have been research and advocacy work in SA water sector for more than 15 years and worked closely with DWA to facilitate the voice and participation of CSOs in the water sector. She is currently registered for a MA degree with the School of government at UWC as a NUFFIC Fellow. Nozi Mjoli Nozi is the Managing Director of her own company – Hlathi Developing Services based in Pretoria (2003- present). Professionally she has expertise in research and consulting in Water Resource Management, Water Supply & Sanitation Services, Gender Diversity in Leadership and Corporate Coaching. She has an MSc and PhD Microbiology (Notre Dame Univ, USA), Post-doctoral Research (University of Cape Town). .
