ST1 in Orthodontics Introduction This is a 3 year CCST training program in Orthodontics. The post is linked with Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. HOSPITALS Royal London Hospital Southend University Hospital Main Duties and Responsibilities The appointed candidate will be expected to: 1 Have active involvement in new patient clinics for the advice, diagnosis and treatment planning of patients referred into the departments. 2 Treat a wide range of malocclusions, including multidisciplinary cases i.e. orthognathic, minor oral surgery, restorative and orthodontic / paediatric patients. 3 Attend and participate in the running of multidisciplinary clinics 4 Active involvement / attendance in tutorials, lectures, journal clubs and organized teaching 5 Undertake an active role in research within the department as part of the D. Clin. The Royal London is a leading, internationally renowned teaching hospital based in east London offering a full range of local and specialist services, which includes one of the largest children's hospitals in the UK with one of London's busiest paediatric Accident and Emergency departments. Home to London's air ambulance, The Royal London is also one of the capital's leading trauma and emergency care centres and hyper-acute stroke centres. The Royal London provides district general hospital services for the City and Tower Hamlets and specialist tertiary care services for patients from across London and elsewhere. It is also the base for the HEMS helicopter ambulance service, operating out of a specially built roof area. There are 675 beds, 110 wards and 26 operating theatres at The Royal London Hospital. The new building opened in February 2012 and is the largest stand alone acute hospital building in Europe. The Department of Orthodontics The Department is grouped with the Department of Paediatric Dentistry with clinical facilities on the 1st Floor of the ‘new’ state of the art Dental Hospital opened in April 2014. The Orthodontic Department provides specialist training for an annual intake of 5-6 Postgraduate Students/Specialist Registrars on a 3 years training programme. The Department therefore has 15-17 Postgraduate Students in Orthodontics. The clinic’s are equipped with up-to-date clinical facilities and are fully computerised arranged as a modern polyclinic. A dedicated room has been allocated for trainee’s with desk space and computers that can be used for digitization or radiographs and tracing of radiographs. There is also a laser scanning room that is part of the Oral Biometrics laboratory and clinical scientist support. The current Consultant Staff: Mr. P. Medical Clearance Appointment to this post is subject to satisfactory medical clearance. Applicants shortlisted for interview will be required to complete a simple medical questionnaire. Any information given will be completely confidential and will be considered only in relation to an application for positions to which the order is applied. - 3 - Southend University Hospital Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides acute services from our main Prittlewell Chase site and at outlying satellite clinics across the region. We maintain nearly 700 inpatient beds, serving a local population of 338,800. We have 4,533 staff comprising 175 consultants, 311 doctors, 1,027 nurses and 2,840 support staff. We provide a comprehensive range of acute services including acute medical and surgical specialties, general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, ear, nose and throat, ophthalmology, cancer treatments, renal dialysis, obstetrics and gynaecology, and children's services. Southend University Hospital is the South Essex surgical centre for uro-oncology and gynae- oncology surgery and is considered to be a centre of excellence for the care of stroke. We also offer breast screening, ophthalmology and orthodontic services to the wider south Essex population. The Orthodontic Department is part of the Surgical Directorate, of which Mr S Mehta and Ms E Gray are the Clinical Directors. Jane Mulreany is the Associate Clinical Director. The Clinical Services Manager is Rebecca O’Keefe. ORTHODONTIC DEPARTMENT PROFILE The Orthodontic Department is situated at Southend University Hospital in the Carlingford Centre, a purpose-built unit in 2010. We are in a combined department with the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery department. The combined clinical facilities include seven dental chairs. Three of these are in a poly clinic and exclusively used by orthodontics and one in a separate self-contained surgery is shared with OMFS. There is a well-equipped laboratory and an office for Consultants and junior staff with networked computers. Orthodontic notes are housed in our own reception. Photographs are taken in the department with a specialist digital camera. Extra-oral Digital radiographs are taken in the main X- ray Department and digital intra-oral radiographs are taken in the department. The hospital is fully PACS networked with PCs available at each chairside. There is access to CBCT facilities. Computer hardware and cephalometric digitising and orthognathic planning software are all available in the clinicians’ office. A wide selection of orthodontic textbooks and journals are available in the clinicians’ office. The hospital has an excellent Post-Graduate Education Centre, containing a medical library with librarians on site STAFFING Consultants Mr Spencer Nute (Full time) Orthodontic Department Clinical Lead and Training Programme Director for Health Education East of England Mr Amerjit Singh (Full time) Ms Purnima Chhabra (Part time) Mr Sarabjit Nandhra (Part Time) Specialty Registrars We have 3 specialty registrar posts, one of which is this vacancy. At any one time we have one 1st year STR, one 2nd year STR and one 3rd year STR. Each attends part-time on rotation with the Royal London Hospital. - 4 - Other Clinical Staff One part-time (2PA) specialist orthodontist and 2 part-time (1 PA each) clinical assistants. Other Staff The department benefits from having a very integrated, experienced workforce. In addition to the clinicians, the department has a number of full and part-time dental nurses, who have specialised in orthodontics for many years. We have 2 experienced part-time orthodontic technicians who undertake appliance and study model fabrication and orthognathic surgery model planning. We also have our own secretaries and receptionists working in the department. THE WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT The department and its satellite units at Basildon University Hospital and Mid Essex Hospitals Trust (Broomfield, Chelmsford) provide specialist hospital orthodontic services for South and Mid Essex. STR’s work at the main Southend Hospital department. We specialise in the treatment of highly complex malocclusions (nearly 60% of our referrals come from other specialist orthodontists).
