LAF has made significant pro- gress, details of which is provided in the rest of this report. The progress we have made over the last twelve years is a result of the dedicated commitment of volunteers and well-wishers working together to dream a better world for persons with dementia and their families. In February this year we were pleased to welcome Dr. Shehan Williams to LAF’s Board of Executive Directors. Dr. Williams is the Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya and a member of the Sri Lanka College of Psychiatrists. The number of individuals with dementia in Sri Lanka continues to increase with the ageing population and is estimated to reach 500,000 by the 2050. LAF provides society with the necessary understanding of the condition and combats stigma in the hope of creating a dementia friendly environment for persons with dementia and their family carers. I am pleased to acknowledge with grateful thanks the work of the Board of Directors, volunteers, staff and everyone who has supported and contributed in numerous ways. We look forward to your continued support. Thank you, Lorraine Yu President Message from Dr. Shehan Williams I am delighted to be associated with Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation as a member of the Board of Executive Directors from the beginning of 2013. I have observed the progress made by the Foundation from the start. Despite its simple begin- nings, the vision and commitment of the Founders has no doubt moved it to be a National Organisation with wide recognition today. I am proud to be a part of the Foundation. Over the past few months, the Foundation has made vast strides in terms of consolidating its organisational structure. We have also fine-tuned our mission and vision for the future and have many exciting goals in the years ahead. Our centre is becoming busier by the day and I am hopeful that very soon we will be running at full strength. We already have final year medical students from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, visiting monthly. I am sure that it will be a model centre with doctors and nurses visiting the centre for training purposes. Our goal for 2014 is to start Alzheimer’s carer support/advocacy groups in all 15 divisions in Colombo and develop a caregiving training module with training workshops conducted at the centre. This is a prelude to islandwide expansion in the future. I am grateful to all our generous well-wishers and friends, the dedicated and enthusiastic staff who work beyond their call of duty, and the visionary board members led by the indomitable Lorraine Yu, for taking forward the challenge of helping the silent sufferers with Alzheimer’s disease and their carers.
