Indeed it has gone forward with courage and success to new levels of public usefulness. With due regard for the prior claims of defense, internal construction has still progressed, not only in the galleries but in the sections devoted to our public educational work. New installations and exhibitions have offered increasingly to visitors the inspiration and recreation afforded by great works of art. The members of our governing boards, as well as other private donors, have been most generous in supporting our work, carrying a burden of contributions for current operation beyond what is usual elsewhere. This is made necessary by our lack of large endowments, so that we must earnestly hope for
