NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL LIBRARY - U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE PESTICIDES DOCUMENTATION BULLETIN A BIWEEKLY PUBLICATION OF NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL LIBRARY U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Volume 1 June 11, 1965 Number 7 OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE One of the primary objectives of the Pesticides Documentation Bulletin is to inventory the multidisci- pline literature in the pest control fields and disseminate it to interested personnel in the Department of Agriculture and other Federal departments and State, private, and industrial organizations. The Bulletin is an index to the literature on pests and their control and the impact on the economy and man’s total environment. The index will include literature on diseases, insects, nematodes, parasites, weeds, and other pests affecting plants, animals, man, our natural resources, and other values in man’s environment. Literature on biological, chemical, cultural, ecological, mechanical, and integrated methods of pest control will be included. Special emphasis will be given to the literature on the biologi- cal, toxicological, physiological, biochemical, pathological, biophysical, and epidemiological aspects of pests and their control by chemical and nonchemical methods. FORMAT AND USE The Bulletin is a computer-produced permuted title index in three parts: Keyword Index, Bibliography, and Author Index. KEYWORD INDEX . This is an alphabetic listing of significant words in titles. Each word has been lifted out and printed on the left margin of the column, followed by the listing of all titles containing that word. As a rule titles are left intact, although some are supplemented by inserting significant words taken from the text. These supplemental words are mainly the names of organisms and chemicals, and are shown within plus signs. Words deemed insignificant are not printed as keywords; however, they are retained in their original place in the title. Words beginning with digits, such as some chemicals, are shown at the end of the alphabetic listing. Special characters which are not recognized by the computer as words, such as Greek letters, are spelled out. Titles in foreign languages are given in English only, with the language of the text shown in parentheses after the title. Having scanned the Keyword Index for significant words and having determined the likely title, the next step is to note the number which has been assigned to each title. This number locates the title in the Bibliography part where full bibliographic data about the title are given. BIBLIOGRAPHY . This is both a numeric and an alphabetic arrangement of titles by their senior or primary authors. Titles having no authors are designated ZZ Anonymous and are listed at the end of the regular alphabetic listing. Abbreviated names of the publications cited follow the form used in the Bibliography of Agriculture . The last element in each citation is the National Agricultural Library classification number which should be used when requesting loans or reproduction of articles. AUTHOR INDEX . All authors are indexed but the number is that of the senior or primary author. l AVAILABILITY OF REFERENCES CITED Loans .
