Torgeir: Pensum muntlig engelsk 10.kl «What’s Love got to do with it?» Directed by Brian Gibson , Touchstone Pictures - 113 minutes - produced 1993 - The true life story of Tina Turner ANGELA BASSET as Tina Turner LAURENCE FISHBURNE as Ike Turner «This film was nominated for 2 Academy Awards and describes the the powerful true life story of rock’n roll legend Tina Turner.Born Anna Mae Bullock, a small-town girl with a one-of-a-kind voice, meets and falls in love with musician Ike Turner.Together, Ike and Tina skyrocket to the ultimate top of the music world, only to come crashing back to the earth as their life in the fast lane spins out of control. From the lowest lows Tina Turner has lived and survived it all. The film is filled with authentic high-energy music and electric performances.» This is how the film company introduces their film on their video cover. When the movie was released, it got excellent critics all over the world. It was described as «gripping, honest and revealing» At the same time the film contains a set of music hits from the sixties and seventies, showing why Ike and Tina Turner were such an amazing couple on stage. The fact that Tina Turner as a solo artist has had a huge comeback after their turbulent break-up, and is now called the grandmother of rock’n roll, is even more impressive. However, you do not have to like the music of Tina Turner to enjoy the movie. It helps of course, but the story itself is powerful and rough in itself. The film script is based on Tina Turner’s biography «I, TINA» and she was a consultant all the way during the recordings. Tina Turner was asked to play her own part herself, but she refused. She said she simply could not do it. When ANGELA BASSET was picked to play the Tina Turner-part, Tina and Angela worked together on all aspects of the role. The result is pretty amazing, and ANGELA BASSET has become one of Hollywood’s most requested black actresses after her brilliant performance as Tina Turner. The film is at times very disturbing. There are scenes of violence and abuse which leave the on-lookers angry and disgusted. Tina Turner herself has commented this by saying that even if she wanted to,she could not leave anything unsaid or in the closet. « I had to go on with my life once and for all,and then the full story had to be told. There are many homes out there ruined by abusive family members, and it does not matter whether you’re a star or not - it’s just terrible.....and extremely sad.». She also expressed this in her special song for the movie «I DON’T WANNA FIGHT» The appalling scenes in the movie are all based on reality, confirmed by witnesses and even not denied by Ike Turner himself. When Ike Turner was released from prison a few years ago after serving a drug sentence, he just said that he had his own story to tell and would not comment on the Tina Turner-movie or book. He later published a book blaming his bad behaviour on his drug addiction. He started a new band trying to have a comeback, but apart from a couple of club appearances, he has been ignored by his former audience. The movie points out the troubles of stardom and fame, the primitive drive for wealth and success, but also the love, the self-esteem and the will to fight on which can make people overcome troubled waters. And Tina - she is still around - strong and powerful as ever. Torgeir. BACKGROUND - BIOGRAPHY Tina Turner had a sad childhood. She lived on a small farm in the town NUTBUSH in Arkansas. She never knew her dad, who was half Indian. Her mother moved away taking her sister with her,and she grew up with her grandma. Tina - then Anna Mae - loved soul and gospel music - and in her teens her favourite artists were Ike Turner and Jimmy Thomas. 17 years old Tina moved to St.Louis to her mother. One night at Club Manhattan, she was discovered by Ike Turner and his band KINGS OF RYTHM, when the band asked the audience to come on stage and sing along. The shy girl grabbed the microphone and sang. Ike knew he had found a real talent, and he did everything to charm the girl and her mother. Anna Mae - only 17 and given attention by her great idol, immediatley fell in love with Ike. In spite of her mother’s resentment, she travelled with the band for a couple of years as « Little Ann»,and her first record was released in 1960. A FOOL IN LOVE turned out to be a huge hit, nobody had heard such a wild female voice before. Soon Ike realised that people favoured Tina instead of him, and he disliked it deeply. They got married and he named her TINA TURNER, trying to control her moves and career in details. In 1966 they had their first global hit with the now classical song RIVER DEEP MOUNTAIN HIGH. Then the producer paid Ike 20000 dollars to stay away from the studio, because he wanted to have Tina on his own. It was one of the biggest hits in pop history, but Ike was not really a part of it. He acted like he was, and started acting abusive towards Tina. At the same time they travelled all over the world as the ultimate couple of rock’n roll. Tina’s performances on stage were wild and erotic, and some were shocked ,some fascinated. When Tina left Ike in 1976 by running battered and bleeding into Hotel Hilton in Dallas, her life was a complete misery. She had been beaten, raped and manipulated for years. Ike had even installed video gear in their private villa in LA to supervise each of her moves indoors. He was in constant need of cocaine, and had always 25000 dollars and a pistol in his pocket in case of drug problems. In the court proceedings that followed, she gave up everything to get rid of Ike, apart from her name. She had a quiet life until 1983.She sang on TV and in clubs, but she was poor and had to receive social support from the state to make ends meet. She lived with friends and even worked as a housekeeper. Her new career took off by an open air concert in Sweden in 1983. «Grøna Lunden» celebrated its 100 year in business, and she was invited to sing old hits. An English producer named Martin Wyre ,convinced her to make a new record. He wanted remixes of old songs, but Tina said no. She wanted a new image, a new style and new songs. He accepted, and her new career had taken off. A career which is far beyond her old one together with Ike. Since 1983 she has become one of the biggest stars of pop and rock, along with Bowie, Elton John, Stones and Pink Floyd. Her album WILDEST DREAMS sold 1.5 million copies in two weeks. She has become extremely rich and is involved in social welfare projects for abused kids in different countries, though she never talks about it. She currently lives in France, with a second and third home in London and Los Angeles. Her concerts are also to be named the best around, with great visual effects and a lot of energy. She also made a special part in the Australian cult movie «MAD MAX AND THE THUNDERDROME» - which boosted the career of actor Mel Gibson as well. She has visited Norway on several occasions, the last times with her summer tours - giving six extra concerts due to full instant bookings. The newspaper VG then rated her show 6. Tina Turner says she is too old to go on, but the first time she said this was when she turned 50.She is now 64. She has also appeared on the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. - What about Ike Turner ? ....you may wonder. He was interviewed by BBC last year. - Are you proud of your ex-wife? they wondered. «Yes, I am proud of her - like I am of the Rolling Stones» was his cryptic reply. tm DISCOGRAPHY: Tina Turner’s latest albums are called TWENTY FOUR SEVEN and ALL THE BEST .Probably not her best, but still an evidence of her ability to sell music to all age groups, herself having reached the age of 64.
