M 1106 The Gospel According to ST. MATTHEW CHAPTER 1. "The book of the generation of ,Jfe jus {Christ, :the,'son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaac; .arid" Isaac 'begat' Jacob; '" and Jacob begat Judas and his 'bre.tjhsen V,'r' '/:',} :",.: „\ The names comprising the geneology of Jesus at the be ginning of St. Matthew tell esoterically the evolution of mankind from the time we left the heaven worlds to begin our descent into matter, until each of us shall reach great spiritual illumination through bringing about the alchemical marriage of the head and the heart. Abraham, the first of the line, means "the father of a multitude". Thus we start with a "multitude" of virgin spir its coming from the Father and descending from the heaven worlds or the "Garden of Eden" into material conditions. This is the same story as that of Adam and Eve, since this symbolic couple represent the masculine and feminine of all humanity. Isaac means "joy and laughter". In those early days infant humanity were perfectly happy before they had descended into a more materialistic world. Isaac begat Jacob, "the supplanter", and this ideal con dition was "supplanted" by one not so happy. Jacob begat Judas, whose name is interpreted as "praised'r and which tells us that early humanity worshipped or praised God even after the first conditions were changed or "supplanted". "And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;" Phares means "breach" or "break". This clearly symbol izes that period when our ancient ancestors ate of the "Tree of Knowledge", causing the "break" or change in our early history known as the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the "Garden of Eden". The mother of Zara ("sunrise") and of Phares ("breach") was Thamar, which means "a palm tree". Because of the fact that the palm tree has both the masculine and feminine sexes, we believe this indicates that the "break" in the normal course of evolution took place when the Sun rose or shone clearly for the first time upon the ancient continent of Atlan 1 tis, shortly after the division of humanity into separate sexes. was a (There time when we were dual-sexed) . The palm tree also symbolizes fertility, and it was after this division into separate sexes that primitive mankind took to themselves the unrestrained use of the generative function. From Phares came Esrom, which means "a dwelling". Thus, we are told that primitive mankind began to build dense bodies or '.'dwelling houses" for the Spirit. These bodies were possessed o'f both the masculine and the feminine attri butes of sexv as, shown, by the fact that Esrom begat Aram, which means '"certain 'districts in Syria and Mesopotamia". Mesopotamia means, "the country of the two rivers". Syria was a country along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, extending inland to Mesopotamia. The capital of Syria was Damascus, called "the most ancient city in the world". A "city" symbolizes a state of consciousness. If the reader will put two and two together he will see that the "country of the two rivers" in the "eastern" part or front of the body, has to do with the positive and negative, or masculine and fem inine, polarities of sex, located in that region of the body. Damascus, the capital, being the oldest "city" (state of con sciousness) in the "world", tells us that physical or sex con- ciousness was the "oldest" or first consciousness possessed by mankind after descending from the heaven worlds into denser matter. Consequently, in one word, Aram, we are toldthatthe first consciousness of primitive man was sexual, brought about by the development of the two separate sex manifestations. "And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naas- son; and Naasson begat Salmon;" Aminadab means "kin of princes", which explains the fact that at one time in its early development mankind re ceived assistance from certain spiritual hierarchies, here des cribed as"princes", in learning to evolve. Mankind was "kin" to these spiritual Beings since all of us are Children of God, and as such are naturally related to each other, although each class belongs to a different stage in evolution. Aminadab begat Naasson, meaning "alchemist". As a result of this assistance from spiritual hierarchies, mankind begins to develop into alchemists, or begins to turn the base metals of the being into spiritual "gold". In another sense, the "Prodi gal Son" had begun the return journey to the Father. Salmon "a garment", comes next. As a result of the practice of this divine alchemy, humanity begins to weave the "soma psuch- icon" or the "golden wedding garment" (also known as "King Solomon's Temple" in Masonry), in which we shall meet the Christ at His second coming. "And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse". 2 Booz symbolizes "strength", and when we have built the "golden wedding garment", we will have at our command the spiritual strength generated through that vehicle. It is said that Booz was the son of Rachab, a harlot. This tells us that the feminine principle or the Life Force, so often used in sensual gratification (as a "harlot"), when conserved and used for regeneration, gives strength to the individual. The next name is Obed, meaning "to worship". When we have lived the story told by the previous names, we will then begin to truly worship God. Obed was the son of Ruth, which means "a friend". Ruth also represents the feminine force, which is a "friend" to mankind when used constructively for regeneration. Obed produced Jesse, whose spiritual significance is "a gift." When we have produced "Jesse" within ourselves, we will make a gift of all that we are and have to God, in the service of humanity. "And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;" The next step after dedicating our lives in unselfish service is to become "David". This name means "beloved of God". We will then be both "kings" and "priests", excelling along both physical and spiritual lines. We will be high Initiates and will soon produce "Solomon" within ourselves. The eso teric meaning of Solomon is "peace and wisdom". Solomon's mother, Bath-sheba, was the "daughter of the oath", which explains that peace and wisdom will come to us only after we have taken a pledge or an oath that the lower phase of our being must serve the higher. It is the belief of the writer that this first half of the gene- ology shows the development of the mystic or heart side of humanity. The second half indicates the development of the occult or mental side. In other words, the esoteric meaning of the characters from Abraham to Solomon explains the raising of the Life Force through the heart, which produces mystical illumination. The second half of the names explains the rais ing of this Force directly up the spinal cord to the head. Having briefly interpreted the concealed message explain ing mystic development, we will now see what steps are re quired for the occultist. (The reader will note that the names used in the Book of Ruth are very similar to the names just interpreted) .The New Testament, however, goes a step far ther than the Old in showing both head and heart develop ment, and also Adeptship, which is the balance of the two. "And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;" 3 Solomon (the wisdom principle) produces Roboam, which means "who enlarges the people".
