DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC & THEATRE Chant Lointain, published in 1957, has become a standard work in the horn repertoire, often appearing on competition lists. Its motives reflect the horn’s history as a hunting instrument and the piece offers players a chance to exercise their own phrasing choices in a cadenza-like section. In this segment, Bozza quotes Wagner’s Opera, Götterdämmerung and Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony. Richard Bissill is a composer, arranger, horn player and Michael Miller teacher. Though widely known as a horn player, Richard has pursued an almost parallel career as an arranger and composer, French horn creating works for the concert hall and the media. Bissill joined the LSO at 22, was Principal Horn of the London Philharmonic Orchestra for 25 years and is now in the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden where from 2009-2017 he served as Nadia Somers Section Principal Horn. Bissill was commissioned by the British French horn Horn Society in 2001 to write Time and Space. It was written for Jim Thatcher and Hugh Seenan. Franz composed many selected works for strings, I. Adagio flutes, wind quintets, including two sonatas and one concerto for II. Larghetto horn. The precise circumstances which led to the composition of III. Allegretto the sonata are not known, but it is believed to have been inspired by the success of Beethoven’s Horn Sonata, Op. 17. While no specified player has been identified Danzi had composed many Nocturno, Op. 7 Franz Strauss works for Carl Türrschmidt, a virtuoso noted for his ability to (1822-1905) exploit the low end of the horns range and that the sonata contains several passages designed to exploit the lower notes of the horn. Chant Lointain Eugene Bozza (1905-1991) Franz Joseph Strauss was a German musician. He was a composer, a virtuoso horn player and accomplished performer Time & Space Richard Bissill on the guitar, clarinet and viola. He was principal horn player of the Bavarian Court Opera for more than 40 years, a teacher at the Nadia Somers, French horn Royal School of Music, Munich, and a conductor. At the age of 15, through the influence of George Walter, Strauss was appointed to the private orchestra of Duke Max in Munich, where he remained for ten years. He gradually found that of all the instruments he could play, the horn suited him best. He then started to compose for horn shortly after that. Nocturno, Op. 7 for horn and piano features beautiful lyric writing for the horn. It has deservedly become one of the most frequently played works of the standard repertoire for horn. In fact, it is a rare semester at any music school when the Franz Strauss’s Nocturno is not played at least once on the semester jury examinations..
