Funding has been approved to contribute towards costs Networks Wanaka) associated with volunteer training and advertising for the Companionship Service for Older People throughout the Upper Clutha. This initiative will enable volunteers to be matched up with any older person in the community wanting companionship. There are currently 18 matches and it is expected this will grow to include a further ten older people over the next year. Arrowtown School Parent Arrowtown School PTA has received funding towards the purchase of a multi-sport goal $2,500.00 Teacher Association for their expected new astro-turf court which is to be installed in the spring of 2017. The multi-sport goal is required to have a safety wall, as the location of the goal sits along the perimeter of the school grounds which neighbours the local pre-school. Aspiring Beginnings Early Aspiring Beginnings Early Learning Centre provide high quality early childhood $2,000.00 Learning Centre education and care to children in the Upper Clutha. They are currently developing their outdoor playscape and funding has been approved for six benches for the children to gather, socialise and explore through pretend and physical play. Aspiring Gymsports Aspiring Gymsports is a non-profit club that provides artistic, rhythmic, tumbling, $2,300.00 recreational and competitive Gymnastic classes together with trampolining for participants from 4 years old through to adults. The club offers classes in the Upper Clutha region with a focus on providing quality, affordable classes. Funding has been approved for the purchase of one carpet-bonded Foam Mat. These mats cover the springs and ply on the new sprung floor which enables safer practice for the gymnasts. Cancer Society of NZ, Otago and The Cancer Society’s work is threefold: funding of Scientific Research, Health Promotion $3,600.00 Southland Division (e.g. Sunsmart in schools, Smokefree initiatives), and Supportive Care. Funding has been approved for their Supportive Care operation in Queenstown Lakes District - providing staff with resources to provide practical support to anyone affected by any cancer. Specifically, a grant has been made to assist with the cost of programme/workshops, the 0800 helpline and information resources. Drama Queenstown Drama Queenstown provides tuition and performance opportunities for youth (primary $1,000.00 school aged children) from throughout the Wakatipu in drama and musical theatre. Every year Drama Queenstown gives all of their 100 + students aged 5–14 years the opportunity to perform on a “real” stage in their end of year play/ performance. Due to the success of last year’s productions, this year they will be performing the musical “Gnomes and Gardens” in a larger venue - the Arrowtown Atheneum Hall, to accommodate a large cast and audience. This show is an inclusive production that gives so many children of the Wakatipu an opportunity to perform on a real stage for a real audience. Funding has been awarded to assist with the purchase of costumes. Happiness House Trust Happiness House is a community based non–profit organisation which provides services $2,500.00 to the Wakatipu district. They provide a warm, friendly, confidential environment where people can meet in a home-like setting. Their purpose is to assist those in need by encouraging healthy and empowering life choices. Funding has been approved for firewood to keep the Centre warm during winter months and for help with rubbish disposal. There are many donated goods from the local community that helps fund the service. Amongst the very good quality and interesting goods donated, some need to be disposed of and this is an ongoing issue and cost to the service. Holy Family Catholic School The purpose of Holy Family Catholic School is to provide approximately 200 children $1,930.43 with a good education in a state integrated school with a special Catholic character. Funding has been awarded to purchase more goals and poles for the sports department. Kahu Youth Trust Kahu Youth Trust provide organised, directed activities/events, on a regular basis for $800.00 youth aged 11–24. They provide positive channels through which young people may achieve success and gain recognition. Funding has been approved to assist with costs associated with the cooking and catering classes that teach life-skills to young people aged 11–24 in the Upper Clutha Region. The popularity of Jardine Park has continued to grow over the years. The recent addition of the multipurpose courts, the bike park, goal posts on the field and the Jack Point track has bought many more families to the area to use the great facilities. Funding has been approved to contribute towards the purchase of an 80-metre flying fox at Jardine Park in Queenstown near their multipurpose court and Community Orchard. Lake County Agricultural & Pastoral The Lake County Agricultural & Pastoral Society has been bringing town and country $1,995.25 Society closer together for more than 100 years through the promotion of the Agricultural and Pastoral Industry with the annual A&P Show. Funding has been approved to purchase new jumping equipment for a new jumping section at the Lake Hayes Show in January 2018, in Queenstown. The jumps, which will include a bridge, an arch and a pool, will be used to run new recreational riding class competitions. Initially, the new classes will be for adult pleasure riders and will expand their equestrian activities which are a key ingredient of A&P Shows nationwide. Plus, the new classes will be the foundation of a pleasure riding section which will expand from adult riders only in 2018 to include younger riders from 2019. There is an active Wakatipu adult riding club who will now be able to take part in their local show - not all horse riders are show jumpers. In addition, the jumps will be portable so other riding groups in the Wakatipu can use them for their own competitions. Lake Hawea Community Centre Lake Hawea Community Centre is the hub for all community activities in the growing $2,000.00 Hawea catchment area. These activities include: a commercial kitchen, function rooms for meetings, weddings, funerals, bowling green, cricket, netball, local library, emergency centres and historical archive rooms. A section of the community centre building requires repair. More specifically, the roof on one side of the small function room needs painting. This will assist in providing weather tightness and preserving the existing structure for the community centre for future. Funding has been awarded to assist with the cost of painting the roof. Lakes District Air Rescue Trust Lakes District Air Rescue Trust provide Air Ambulance support throughout the region $2,088.00 effecting timely and life saving helicopter rescue and transport to save people lives, improve their survivability and better their chances of a positive medical outcome. Their volunteer crew give their time at no cost to the community in both training and actual operation hours. The area covered by the Trust is vast, mountainous and extremely variable in weather extremes. They need to provide their volunteer crew with protective outerwear to keep them safe when effecting rescues in all weather. Funding has been approved for the purchase of 12 Thinsulate jackets. Lakes District Museum Lakes District Museum provides a professionally run Museum for the benefit of the $4,000.00 residents of and the visitors to the Queenstown Lakes District. The Museum requires ongoing storage for its collections and temporary displays. Currently, the Museum is extremely short of storage space and needs an area to process, accession and de- accession objects. The plan is to build a below street level storage facility containing Dexion shelving and benches. Funding has been approved towards the cost of purchasing shelving units. Life Education Trust Heatland Otago Life Education Trust (New Zealand), a charity working with over 250,000 primary school $2,000.00 Southland children nationwide, helps to empower them to make the right decisions about their bodies, friendships, identity, food and nutrition and helpful/harmful substances. The aim is for them to become good citizens in their communities as they mature. Funding has been approved towards the cost of carpet for the mobile classroom. With constant use by 7,800 children from 60 schools on an annual basis wear and tear is a constant issue. LUMA Light Festival Trust LUMA Southern Light Project is a free public event, showcasing a curated collection of $4,000.00 stunning light sculptures and installations located in the Queenstown Gardens with a focus on transformation of space, public interaction, art, culture and education. Queenstown is well known as being a place of beauty, and the natural environment is a key element of this. LUMA Southern Light Project hopes to channel some of the amazing creative talent in Queenstown, coupled with national, and international artists into an accessible, all ages, community light event. The motivation for LUMA is to create an accessible public event that will engage communities and partners to explore the connection between art, technology and design through the medium of light.
