AP Literature and Composition Summer Assignment Welcome to AP Literature! I am looking forward to the upcoming 2014-2015 school year, as I hope you are too. This summer I’d like you to read a novel of your choice by one of the authors listed below. The novel you select should be 180 pages or longer. It should not be a work that falls into the category of autobiography or memoir. The Authors: Jane Austen James Baldwin Saul Bellow Emily Bronte Edwidge Danticat Anita Desai Louise Erdrich Ernest Hemmingway Zora Neale Hurston Henry James Maxine Hong Kingston Jhumpa Lahiri Chang-rae Lee Bernard Malamud Gabriel Garcia Marquez Toni Morrison Bharati Mukherjee Vladimir Nabokov Flannery O’Connor Marilynne Robinson John Updike John Edgar Wideman Virginia Woolf Richard Wright The Assignment 1. Identify a passage from the work that can stand alone. This should be a passage when typed is ¾ to 1 page in length (single-spaced). This passage should be a moment that works as a mini- story in itself, one that could be copied and shared with the class and not require explanation as to what is going in the work to make it understandable. Email this transcribed passage as a Word document [.doc or .docx] (include the title of the work and the author’s name at the top) by Friday, August 29th. 2. Use post-its to mark ten passages that to you play a central role in revealing the novel’s central message. You will receive a grade for completing this step within the first two days of the start of school. We will study the novel you selected more closely upon the start of school in September. Expect to have an exam on the novel within the first two weeks of class. Enjoy your summer, but do not put this work off until the end. Please email me if you have any questions about this work: [email protected]. .
