Last glimpsed on television in the late ‘80s, The Lovers! follows the progress of the relationship between Geoffrey and Beryl, a hesitant, inexperienced young couple attempting to negotiate the minefield of the ‘permissive’ society – such as it was in Manchester in the early 1970s! Jack Rosenthal adapted his popular sitcom into a film with a warm nostalgic glow, a genuine portrayal of 1970s Britain with every detail: the cars, the clothes, the wall-paper, even the music... He captured the same wistful mood as films like Billy Liar and A Kind of Loving, albeit with a more gentle tone. Wilcox & Beckinsale both enjoyed further success, as did Rosenthal; unfortunately, Richard Beckinsale’s career was cut tragically short. Here they are perfectly paired, and together with Rosenthal’s tender scriptwriting, they make a winning combination.
