Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Solicitation for Hawai‘i State Art Museum (HiSAM) CURATORIAL PROGRAMMING FOR 2022 IN RELATION TO HONOLULU TRIENNIAL Submission Deadline: July 23, 2021 2:00 pm HST BACKGROUND The Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) was established in 1965 as the official state arts agency of Hawai‘i to promote, perpetuate and preserve culture and the artsin Hawai‘i. The purpose of the Art in Public Places Program is enhance the environmental quality of the public state buildings and spaces for the enjoyment and educational and cultural enrichment of the public. http://sfca.hawaii.gov/ The Hawai‘i State Art Museum (HiSAM) is located on the 2nd floor of the No. 1 Capitol District Building, 250 South Hotel Street, in downtown Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Admission is always free. The museum is open Monday – Saturday, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, and with extended hours on the first Friday of each month from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., except for state and federal holidays. Solicitation is for temporary assistance to develop, implement and curate exhibits at the Hawaii State Art Museum and provide programs and community events to increase access to the arts during the Honolulu Triennial. Contract Dates-August 2, 2021-December 31-2022 Opening dates of exhibit and programs to take place in Spring 2022 with statewide public engagement including but not limited to Hawaii State Art Museum, Bishop Museum and Iolani Palace. Production of educational forces to support the visibility of contemporary artists and ideas from the Asia-Pacific region through exhibition and display and educational program for the duration of Spring 2022. The Museum requires inclusion of works from the Art in Public Places Collection to be featured in the exhibitions at the Hawai’i State Art Museum The Museum solicits for the development of appointed guest curatorial team and representatives to fulfill the responsibility of selecting artists and developing artwork proposals in lieu with the curatorial framework, and seeks advice on all exhibition and display related matters in tandem with The Museum . The Museum works collaboratively with contractor and guest appointed curators to determine the installation timetable with dates and times determined in a timely fashion ahead of a Spring 2022 opening as agreed between both parties. The Museum works collaboratively with contractor and guest appointed curators to supplement the agreed exhibition(s) with in-kind hosting public program(s), which may include talks, panels, screenings or workshops, in the lead up to the Hawai’i Triennial as part of the Hawai’i Triennial exhibition period(s). Below we outline the financial and administrative logistical responsibilities to be fulfilled by Contractor: Contractor shall pay the costs of all curatorial development expenses, including honorariums, travel expenses, accommodation, and hosting for the guest curators. Contractor shall pay the costs and execute administrative tasks related to the artworks at Hawaii State Art Museum including: Loan permission, fees, and permits relating to the borrowing of artworks; Artwork production pertaining to any commissions or fabrication costs; Artists’ honoraria including travel expenses and artist accommodations for visiting artists to undertake research visits to Honolulu; Two-way shipping costs of artworks, or artwork components requiring transport, construction, installation planning, and material expenses. Condition reports with written and visual documentation confirmed by artists/curators upon installation and de-installation; All-risk fine arts insurance coverage for artworks during storage, while in transit and during the installation and de-installation of the artworks and as well as for the duration of the exhibition at HAwaii State Art Museum. Create a timetable with artists about how and when they can engage with the collections and create an install schedule and access plan to The Museum in consultation with The Museum’s team. Additional staffing for visitor services and security requirements may be provided by Contractor as needed or required by The Museum, with advance approval by The Museum Contractor shall pay for and conduct administrative tasks related to producing education materials and interpretive didactics related to the Hawai’i Triennial including: Design and production of printed collateral for distribution (catalogue, guidebook, site map, all-access pass) Write, edit, design, print all exhibition didactics (wall labels, curatorial text, directional signage) in consultation with any style guidelines provided by The Museum. Co-program educational events and provide joint support with marketing and staffing as mutually agreed, including any special performances, discursive events, films, and youth activities. Lead and support docent-led training sessions and provide a brown bag luncheon for museum staff and volunteers. Arrange for the session to the filmed and be available for use by docents and volunteers unable to attend in person. Promote the Hawai’i Triennial and The Museum’s partnership on social media, e-newsletter, press releases and printed collateral, including the Triennial catalogue publications. Design and provide invitations for public dissemination for events including Super Saturday at Hawaii State Art Museum All public references of The Museum’s name or use of The Museum’s logo in printed and digital material will be approved by The Museum in advance of public distribution. Submit for final approval to The Museum any artwork that may be displayed at The Museum’s site. The Museum to provide: Provide access to the use and display of Hawai’i Triennial artworks in its selected galleries; Gallery access for Hawai’i Triennial artworks may be non-exclusive as mutually agreed between The Museum and Contractor Provide reasonable access to collections, research staff, and all related facilities during business hours by prior arrangement in accordance with Museum procedures at no cost to participating artists and the Hawai’i Triennial curators and core team before the Triennial opening, during Hawai’i Triennial exhibition, and up to the end of the Triennial deinstallation period; Provide facility reports of the allocated exhibition spaces and cover all standard overhead costs for operating the venues, before Hawai’i Triennial opening, during Triennial exhibition, and up to the end of the Triennial deinstallation period; Provide maintenance of the artworks and exhibition spaces during exhibition period with regular condition checks; Without limiting any liabilities or any other obligation of The Museum, it will provide security for Exhibits during the exhibition period while on museum premises; The Museum will appoint a design-lead to collaborate with curators on an appropriate layout for installation of works in the exhibition curators to realize the project in a manner consistent with the artist(s)’ reasonable wishes and integrity of the space; The Museum will provide reasonable installation and technical support for selected Triennial Exhibit galleries and additional public spaces installations as needed, including design and production of any necessary way-finding signage in light with The Museum guidelines; The Museum will cross-market its participation in Triennial through its existing communication channels, including website, social media, and membership materials; Any underwriting efforts at the Museum will be coordinated between Contractor and the Hawai’i State Art Museum staff Contractor will provide a Certificate of Liability to SFCA (HiSAM) prior to commencement of installation. Contract award shall be based on a ranking of the following, not solely on proposal price by a panel: •Resume •Description of past coordination work in museums and cultural institutions in Hawai‘i •Itemized budget.
