Central Washington University Central Washington University, or CWU, is a regional, comprehensive public university located on a 380-acre campus in Ellensburg, Washington. Founded in 1891, the university consists of three chief divisions include the Office of the President, Business and Financial Affairs, and Academic and Student Life. Within ASL are four colleges: the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Business (Ellensburg campus and centers in the Puget Sound and central regions), the College of Education and Professional Studies, and College of the Sciences. CWU is located about 110 miles (180 km) east of Seattle, Washington on Interstate 90 in the Kittitas Valley. In addition to being the fastest growing public university in the state of Washington, CWU is considered an emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution with 15 percent Hispanic students. Nearly all students who attend Central Washington University (CWU) are state residents. In fact, just about 5 percent of freshmen are from outside the state. CWU has about 30 clubs and organizations for students to check out, from the Rodeo Club to the Trombone Studio. Students can also get involved in several academic hubs on campus, including the Center for Excellence in Leadership and the Center for Student Empowerment. On the sports fields, the CWU Wildcats compete in the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). Graduate students can complete degrees through the Central Washington University Department of Art, among other departments. Notable alumni of Central Washington University include Dallas Cowboys quarterback Jon Kitna, who led the Wildcats to a national football championship while at CWU, and Doug Wood, chief operating officer of clothing manufacturer Tommy Bahama. Women’s Rugby: The women’s rugby program began in 1990 and in the Fall of 2014 became recognized as an emerging Division 1 women’s sport in the NCAA. Since becoming a varsity program in 2014 CWU has competed in both 7’s and 15’s National Championships yearly, remaining top 4 in the nation. We are a diverse and powerful collection of skilled and dedicated women seeking to foster a positive performance environment that aids in the development of selflessness, respect, health and personal growth. It is one thing to help an athlete grow to their fullest athletic potential it is another to prepare these women for life after college and rugby; we strive to achieve both of these outcomes. There are many angles that our coaching staff approaches from due to not only the diversity of the team but because it is important to have change. Our program camps, hikes and engages in community service together all as different avenues to bond and enjoy what we are given. Going into our 2018-2019 season we have 3 All-Americans and 4 National team players in the women's player pool. This is a high level program that encourages athletes to compete at the next level. At Central Washington we apply many resources to enhance learning and health such as: film analysis, individual chalk talk and field sessions, player handbooks, nutritionists, tutors, sports psychologists, strength and conditioning coaches, and athletic trainers. The new turf at Tomlinson Stadium allows all weather, night and day, access to on field training. As part of a varsity program we are active in our community service efforts.
