U12 Boys Win Division Three Junior Country Basketball Championship The 2015 City Holden SA Junior Country Championships were held during March, with nine Barossa Settlers Teams in action over two weekends. It was a challenging year for many of the teams, with six of the nine playing in division one or two competition. The U12 Boys team, playing in division three, were the big winners, going through the championship undefeated to take the title for 2015. U12 Boys, Division 3 Champions Despite only having six players, the boys put on a dominant performance to remain undefeated through the minor rounds and winners by a significant margin in the final. Both losses were to eventual grand finalists Bordertown and Eastern Hills. Coach, Jenni Schrapel, was very proud of the team, with all the girls improving a lot over the weekend. They played a close match in the cross-over quarter final but were unable to defeat Keith, missing the semi-finals by just four points. Front: Harvey Nobes, Noah Schell, Lewis Lloyde, Mitchell Doecke, Cooper Kalleske, Brodie Griggs U14 Girls, Division 1 A tough championship for the girls, who were competitive in their matches but couldn’t get a win over strong opposition, finishing their weekend after the minor rounds. They faced the challenge of losing two players prior to the championship but, with the help of two U12 players, managed to finally get a win in their last match. Coach, Teresa Gerlach, was very proud of the effort and commitment of the team and thrilled to finish on a high note, saying that the girls never gave up. A forfeit in the division 2 quarter final gave them a semi final match against eventual champions Pt Lincoln, who were just too strong, winning convincingly. With many bottom age players in the team, coach, Ben MacCulloch, is expecting a stronger showing next year. After some tough minor round matches, they had a good win over Pt Pirie in the division 2 quarter final before losing to the Riverland in their semi final. The 2015 championship signals the end of junior basketball for Daniel Barker, Tyler Dewhurst, Lachlan Fiorita and Austin Walsh. Barossa Settlers wishes them well for their move to senior basketball. The team improved across the weekend and finished strongly with two wins, against Mildura and eventual grand finalists Murray Bridge. Barossa Junior Settlers say farewell and good luck for Nationals to Chelsea Brook and goodbye to Shanai Venning, who both finish their junior careers this year.
