On June 16th the Chennai Trekking Club and The Hindu are organizing the Chennai Coastal Cleanup, a massive cleanup drive to bring awareness on environmental conservation. 100 groups including corporates, NGOs, schools are participating totaling more than 6000 volunteers over 15km beach stretch from Marina till Injambakkam. The event will be inaugurated at 6am at Eliot beach Besant Nagar by the Chennai Mayor and Principal Secretary & Commissioner of Chennai Corporation. 1500+ individual volunteers will assemble at 12 different points in the city and travel together to 15 beach zones along the Chennai Coastal line: ● Adyar - Rainforest - 5:30am ● Ashok Pillar - Udayam Theatre - 5am ● Egmore - Railway station - 5:15am ● Guindy circle - Mount Road opposite railway station - 5:15am ● Kottivakam - Bharat Petroleum bunk - 5:30am ● Koyambedu - petrol bunk opposite CMBT - 5am ● Marina lighthouse - lighthouse - 6am ● Tirunmangalam signal - Anna Nagar West bus depot - 5am ● Tirunvanmyur - Adyar Bakery - 5:30am ● Velachery - opposite Vijayanagar bus stop - 5:15am ● Besant Nagar - Eliot beach - 5:50am ● Tambaram - Bus Stand - 5am The individual volunteers (mostly members of the Chennai Trekking Club) will be car and bike pooling together from 12 assembly points to their assigned beach zones: In addition to these individual participants, 85 groups totaling another 5000+ volunteers will be participating in this mega cleanup drive: 1. Intl School ● ROTARACT CLUB OF RAJALAKSHMI ENGINEERING COLLEGE ● Sunshine academy ● YMCA ● SSN NSS Individual volunteers and groups will be distributed among 15 beach zones from Marina till Injambakkam in accordance to the amount of garbage on the different zones: Kuppathotti will be assisting us with the segregation and recycling of categories A, B and C. ALERT! is our safety partner and will be providing medical assistance in all 15 zones during the cleanup. BioTec bags and EcoLife are sponsoring bio-degradable garbage bags for the volunteers. "Temple Adventures & AASAI, the Chennai Dive Club and Coastal Security Group, Tamilnadu Police" will be participating with scuba divers to at Eliot beach 150 organizers from the Chennai Trekking Club will be coordinating with the 80 participating groups and total 5000+ volunteers across 15 beach zones on Sunday morning during the 3 hour mega cleanup. 50 photographers from the Chennai Trekking Club will be covering the clean drive in detail and publishing a shortlist of best photos to social and news media to spread awareness on the event Gloves, garbage bags, refreshments & breakfast will be provided to all participants. Founded in 2008, the group has become one of the largest and most active outdoor communities in South India, encompassing 19.000 members and growing with 500 new members each month. Outdoor activities including easy 1-day, moderate and difficult multi-day treks, cycling, biking, outings, photography, workshops, ladies, kids & family treks, social initiatives, environment & conservation drives, swimming, marathons and triathlons.
