Forgiveness summarizes Scripture in one word because the Old Testament through the New is an ongoing revelation of that singular attribute of God which sets him apart from all other gods and world powers. Forgiveness epitomizes our faith as well since every Christian is called to respond as Christ instructed in the Sermon on the Mount: “You have heard that it was said, ‘an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you … love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you … for if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same. (Mt. 5:38-46.) Love cannot live without forgiveness. Forgiveness is not only the defining characteristic of a Christian, it is without a doubt the most demanding requirement Jesus asks of those who claim to follow him. Truth is, when offended, forgiveness is the last thing we think of, or put another way, the reaction we steadfastly refuse. Such reaction, though, is not the denial of forgiveness, but the symptom of our need to forgive, the first stage of the process of forgiveness. Forgiveness is difficult because it is not an event, but a process we must work through if we are to follow Jesus. As Father Mike Schmitz, the chaplain for Newman Catholic Campus Ministries at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, explains it, it is a process which permits us to experience the transformative power of forgiveness which frees both the forgiven and the forgiver. A person incapable of forgiveness undergoes a misery prohibiting joy and peace. Fr. Schmitz suggests that we should appreciate the essential steps of the process of forgiveness: acknowledge there is something to forgive; understand clearly what someone has caused you; and instead of dismissing it or saying it does not matter, appreciate the hurt or damage someone has caused you and make the decision to release them from their debt. Persevering in this process is not only the way to personal freedom from the slavery that is vengeance, but the fulfillment of the petition expressed in every Our Father, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Mercy Challenge for the week: Someone to forgive? Start the process, praying to your Father for the grace and strength to persevere. MOMENTOS DE MISERICORDIA BY: DEACON TOM DRISCOLL La sexta obra espiritual de misericordia de, "perdonar las ofensas de buena gana," nos recuerda del centro principal de nuestra fe: el perdón.
