S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY VIEW FROM S T C A L N R N A THE CHAIR IN Y S SATURDAY 1ST JUNE 2019 GLE Welcome to everybody for today’s NCL Division 1 game against Normanton Knights. Normanton were in the Premier Division last season and were unlucky to be relegated on points difference. Rugby has been played in Normanton since 1879 and in 1898 Normanton joined the then Northern Union. Over the years Normanton have produced numerous professional players including, Ben Westwood, Jamie Langley, Ben Cockayne and Ryan Hampshire. In 2015 they progressed to the 4th round of the Challenge Cup losing out to Batley Bulldogs. Today’s game finds both teams in the lower half of the table which should make for a close encounter. In our last home game we entertained Saddleworth Rangers running out winners 30 – 22. A fortnight ago saw us travel to league leaders Pilkington Recs with perhaps one of the youngest teams to appear for us in the NCL. Despite this, the team put up a fantastic and spirited performance before losing out 26 – 6 which by all accounts flattered Pilkington. Hopefully this spirit and determination will see us climb up the league table in the coming months. Congratulations to our Under 15’s team for winning yet again at the Rhinos Challenge, bringing home the trophy for the 3rd successive year. Look on our website for junior fixtures; we have some great teams that are well worth watching. Ryan Atkins Raffle. The veteran Toronto Wolfpack forward, who had a fine career previously with St Helens and England, commented on how the referee in one Sunday match seemed to be taking a different approach to that adopted by Ben Thaler in the BetFred Super League clash between Catalans Dragons and Wigan Warriors the previous day with regard to ball stealing, or “ripping out”. Wilkin suggested that the stance of match officials should be uniform. But he admitted, I think, that that is easier said than done. It’s becoming increasingly difficult, I reckon, to police this particular aspect of Rugby League. Referees, especially at Super League level, have to determine in an instant, and with the game being played at pace, whether the ball has been lost through a loose carry or a ball-steal, and if the latter whether more than one defender has still been involved in the tackle. It seems to be particularly messy when an attacking player has been grounded and is trying to get up, and you can understand why some blokes seem to be perplexed and aggrieved when a decision goes against them. It’s become an ugly aspect of our sport, one that surely cannot appeal to casual spectators, and for me there’s a simple solution. Simply get rid of the rule regarding only one player being allowed in a tackle if the ball is stolen, and any other of the ancillary regulations that apply, and revert to how the game was played in yesteryear. I can’t recall when those rules were introduced, but it used to be understood that the ball carrier had a duty to retain possession and, if he didn’t do so, it was his lookout. I don’t remember any particular problems being caused by that approach, and I believe we’d all be much better off by going back to that philosophy. The only judgement needed, if the ball comes loose and is retrieved by another player, is whether a knock-on has been made by that player’s teammate. Otherwise it’s simply a matter of the referee waving “play on”. I’m possibly being simplistic, so it may be best to give my notion a trial (not that it will be treated seriously) in a designated competition, something like the 1895 Cup, for example, to see how it works in practice. The game has changed in recent years, of course, and for much of the time when players were expected to protect the ball the mantra was “they don’t go without their legs”. There wasn’t anything like as much upper body tackling involved back then, so it may be that my proposal won’t perhaps work so well in the present era. But it’s worth an attempt, surely, because the current approach is far too subjective and difficult for referees and everyone else.
