Treaties of Velasco In exchange for his release, Santa Anna would persuade Mexican leaders to recognize Texas independence. 3. Treaties of Velasco The Mexican government refused to honor the Treaty because Santa Anna had no authority to sign the treaty as a prisoner of war. 4. Texans consider Annexation to U.S. After the war with Mexico, Texans had to decide whether or not to pursue annexation of Texas to the United States. 5. Texas Rangers The primary purpose of the Texas Rangers was to protect Texans from American Indians. 6. Houston and Indian Policy President Houston believed the best American Indian policy was to make peace with each American Indian group. 7. President Houston Steps Down President Sam Houston did not run for a second consecutive term because the constitution forbade it. 8. Indian Policies Differ One of the greatest differences between Presidents Houston and Lamar was their policies toward American Indians. 9. President Mirabeau Lamar “I experience no difficulty in deciding a proper policy to be pursued against the (Indians). It is to push a vigorous war against them…without (mercy). 10. President Mirabeau Lamar The 2nd President of Texas, Lamar was known for conflicts with the American Indians, including: Forced removal of the Cherokee to Oklahoma Council House Fights Death of Chief Bowles 11. Chief Bowles and Cherokees Chief Bowles brought the Cherokees to East Texas. He signed treaties with President Houston, but was attacked for refusing to move to Indian Territory during Lamar’s presidency. Anglo-American settlers wanted to take Cherokee lands. He was killed at the Battle of the Neches. 12. Council House Fight In a struggle known as the council House Fight, Texans tried to take Comanche negotiators as hostages. 35 Comanches were killed, destroying any chance of peace between Texans and the tribe. 13. President Mirabeau Lamar Improving education was an important goal for President Lamar. 14. Austin becomes Capital The town of Austin was chosen to be the capital of Texas because it was more centrally located in Texas than the town of Houston. 15. Santa Fe Expedition President Lamar wanted to establish a trade route between Texas and Santa Fe. The expedition failed. The expedition was attacked by Native Americans, and plagued by torrential rains and lack of food and water. 16. Santa Fe Expedition The Santa Fe Expedition members were captured by Mexican soldiers and imprisoned. This conflict led to the eventual annexation of Texas by the United States. 17. Hostility to Tejanos Many U.S. immigrants moved into Texas at this time. They were hostile to the Tejanos because they saw them as Mexican. 18. Republic of Texas Congress The Texas Republic faced financial difficulties because the government: gave away so much land to soldiers had few sources of income Printed too much paper money 19. Republic of Texas Congress Congress provided revenue for the Republic by Placing a tariff on imports Imposing land title fees Imposing property and business taxes 21. Republic of Texas Congress The Texas Congress reserved a great deal of public lands in Central Texas for state universities and public schools. 22. President Anson Jones Anson Jones was the last President of the Republic of Texas. During his term, Texas was annexed to the United States. 23. Annexation to the U.S. Texans wanted to be part of the U.S. because: Most Texans had emigrated from the U.S. Texas and the U.S. had strong business ties. Texas and the U.S. had strong cultural ties.
