Considered one of the main lungs of the province of Alicante, it is rich with wildlife and botanical treasures. Throughout ancient history, the particular nature of this land was determinant for the settlement of a large number of peoples, and it was also a passageway for important communication routes between civilizations in the past. Officially, it belongs to the municipalities of Alcoy, Cocentaina, Muro de Alcoy, Agres, Alfafara, Bocairent and Banyeres de Mariola. The highest point is Montcabrer peak (1389 m.), rising in the municipal territory Cocentaina. The Mariola Mountains account for the most important hydrographical network, with the contribution of rivers such as the Vinalopó or the Serpis, whose sources spring out of it. Itinerary We begin at the sanctuary of Mare de Deu d’Agres, taking a trail that goes up by the side of the ravine, to get to the Montcabrer shelter. We follow on a trail that descends to the South, to further come across a detour leading to the Southeast. We will immediately notice the top of Montcabrer Mount, which will be our best reference. Once leaving this point behind, we will successively reach Mas de Llopis, la Font de Sanxo, la Font de l’Esquerola, la Font de Huit Piletes and la Font de Penya Banyà. Upon reaching this last point, a forest trail will lead us to Sant Cristofol Chapel, the end of our route..
