The CoR is a political assembly that exists to improve and safeguard a key part of European democracy: the proper involvement in the EU policy process of all the forms of subnational government that can be found in Europe’s Member States. Renew Europe’s MISSION » to ensure that the liberal and democrat goals of helping every individual to achieve their full potential, of defending in equal measure individual and economic freedom in a way which protects the weakest in society, is represented in the policy positions of the CoR, and ultimately of the EU; » to act as a strong pillar of the European liberal family – the ALDE/Renew Europe caucus -, bringing added value to its policy proposals from the local and regional perspective, creating new opportunities for action and nding synergies, strengthening the caucus over time, and contributing to a stronger and more liberal European Union. L YOUTH The European Liberal Youth, abbreviated as LYMEC, is a pan-European youth organisation LIBERA PEAN seeking to promote liberal values throughout the EU as the youth organisation of the ALDE Party EURO and its parliamentarygroup in the European Parliament (ALDE, Alliance of Liberals and Demo- crats for Europe). The Young Democrats for Europe is the youth wing of the European Democratic Party and of Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, Parliamentary Group. It was announced on 9 May 2007, the 50th Anniver- sary of the Treaty of Rome, and formally established at its rst conference on 22 September 2007 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The founding members are the youth wings of the seven EDP founding political parties. The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) is the European Union's (EU) assembly of local and regional representatives that provides sub-national authorities (i.e. regions, counties, provinces, municipalities and cities) with a direct voice within the EU's institutional framework. Established in 1994, the CoR was set up to address two main issues. First, about three quarters of EU legislation is implemented at local or regional level, so local and regional representatives needed to have a say in the development of new EU laws. Second, there were concerns about a widening gap between the public and the process of European integration; involving the elected level of government closest to the citizens was one way of closing the gap. Renew Europe is the successor of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) in the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) – a political group that represents liberal & democrat city mayors, regional presidents and ministers, and local and regional councillors in the process of developing EU policies and laws. The CoR is a political assembly that exists to improve and safeguard a key part of European democracy: the proper involvement in the EU policy process of all the forms of subnational government that can be found in Europe’s Member States. @RenewEuropeCoR RenewEuropeCoR www.reneweurope-cor.eu Renew Europe - European Committee of the Regions 101 Rue Belliardstraat 1040 Brussels - BELGIUM Phone: +32 (0)2 282 2059 Fax: +32 (0)2 282 2331 www.reneweurope-cor.eu.
