William T. Kane while he was University Librarian at Loyola University. Separations: None Biographical Sketch William Terence Kane, S.J., was born on October 20, 1880, in Chicago, one of six children of Lawrence and Elizabeth McCarthy Kane. He attended Holy Family School and St. Ignatius College before entering the Society of Jesus in 1898. During World War I (1918-1919) he was a Chaplain for the 35th Division, where Harry S. Truman was a major. In 1930 he was named University Librarian at Loyola University, Chicago, a position he retained until his death in 1946. While University Librarian, Father Kane established the Jesuitca and Napoleonica collections at the library, in addition to creating an archival collection documenting the university’s history, Jesuit history, and local Catholic history. Scope and Content The Kane Collection is comprised of 19.5 linear feet spanning the years 1829 to 1945. The collection includes correspondence, reports, journals, minutes, photographs, blueprints, drawings, programs, syllabi, flyers, booklets, theses, sheet music, and Photostat copies. Father Kane concentrated on collecting Loyola University, Jesuit, and local Catholic history. Languages found in the collection include English, French, Latin, Italian, and Spanish. This collection is organized according to a classification schedule developed by Father Kane. It is broken down into four categories – Loyola University, Jesuitica, Local Catholic History, and Prints/Photographs, which are further divided into subjects within each category. The numbering system used by Father Kane (i.e. A1.1 – A1.11) represents individual items and is used as the folder numbers for this finding aid. Subjects include university history, benefactors, civic projects, grounds and buildings, schools/colleges, libraries, and honorary degrees. Series 2: Jesuitica, 1850, 1872-1941, Boxes 23-28 This series includes correspondence, reports, newsletters, programs, booklets and brochures, articles, notes and theses. Subjects include Jesuit missions, Père Marquette, Arnold Damen, S.J., parishes, writings by Jesuits, and Jesuit schools. Among the notable items in this series is an 1850 letter by Peter DeSmet (Pierre-Jean DeSmet), S.J., written in French. Series 3: Local Catholic History, 1829-1835, 1860-1942, Boxes 29-35 This series includes correspondence, programs, booklets, brochures, articles, journals (transcriptions and Photostats), a glass plate negative, photographs, and a thesis. Subjects include the Otto L. Schmidt, Elias Kent Kane, Thomas J. F. Owen, Major General Winfield Scott, early Chicago, parish histories, Mother Mary Agatha O’Brien, Lizzie Sharp, Eugene Bononcini, D.D., and the Eucharistic Congress. Languages include English, French, and Italian.
